Oh, of course you get it. America is essentially like a fortress, when was the last time you got invaded, when did our cities looked like Mariupol, when did your populations had to endure like Stalingrad once had to? This bubble of artificial safety creates specific ideological inclinations and desires, to be left alone to grill for example.
The reality however is that the planet is fucking ruthless and deeply unsafe, there is evil everywhere, survival is still as important as it was a thousand years ago, and there is no end of history and kumbaya singing, and safety never ever lasts, just like empires don't last.
Regardless of who "wins" (considering the many thousands of dead people, both sides already lost, as they are below demographic replacement levels), there will be consequences for the rest of us and our societies. Shifting the balance of power between east and west, between neoliberalism and autocracy, between authoritarian rule and progressive degeneracy, all of this will send seismic ripples through the world.
I do agree in full that it would be amazing if the killing just stopped. I'd be quite happy even with a long term armistice, which would preserve the status quo as it is now, just diminish the violence, but chances are quite small, because Russia is showing weakness, Ukraine has Western funding and weaponry, and this is exactly the sort of situation that guarantees continuation of full war, with neither side being hurt severely enough to desire peace.
