You know what's crazy about that whole. "I was raised roman, catholic, charity is something you do in private" shit. "You don't flaunt it. You don't make a big to do about it"
Never been to a church where they didnt stop mass. Just so they could send a wicker basket thru the crowd to get stuffed with untaxed cash by poor fools who are only doing it cause the guy next to em is. They take like 10 minutes out of mass just to shake down the audience for cash. publicly too. Genuinely hard pressed to find anything else that puts on such a production around charitable donations. It's a staple in every catholic/christian mass, making a big public hooplah about charity.
And it's by design. Because it works. They don't just leave the bowl in the back or install a permanent secure collection box. They gotta shake you down at the door where everyone can see you. Or do it in a pew where your surrounded (specially smaller communities) by judgmental people who know your entire buisness the least are real mouthy bout local drama. So now your being passed a basket by a some guy who just dropped a 20, money's tight but that same guy next to you is just staring. Waiting for your move. You let go of the 1 you're clutching in your pocket. What if the ladies at the school find out i only had a 1 to give. The 20 dollars you can't spare, it goes in the basket. All under the guise of emotinal manipulation and public shaming thru donations. Donations the church will use to do whatever the fuck they want with, tax free. Likely used in the pursuit of child sex crimes the least protecting those who commit them.
The catholic church is fucking egregiously awful when it comes to charity.
