The part that got me was the off hand "some people feel beholden to their audience". Plus the "just play it and have fun" is all the proof one needs to show that he only cares that he is entertained, not about anything else.

And he's so defensive over a game that critics didn't. He's unwilling to admit that a game he likes has problems, that if you disagree you are the one who's wrong. He's raging because he hates that he's perceived this way. He hates being seen as a joke and a loser. And he hates that in reality, it's all true. He wants to be respected as a gaming authority, as someone people will go to for genuine and intelligent opinions on gaming and he feels like he deserves it purely because he's been around for so long.
