Based rabbit is half right here.
RWBY was always shit, but that was the appeal. It *knew* it was shit, and it loved it. It was just Oum making a rule of cool world where cute girls could fight big monsters in cool ways. That's fucking it.
Faunus weren't invented so Oum could tackle the complexities of bigotry in a modern world, it was because he wanted to make a fucking cat girl. White Fang existed because 'yo, what if there was a faction of them to fight?'
It's why we've never seen the Paladin mechs again, despite how fucking useful they'd be, or the robo-troopers.
It was always stupid, turn your brain off fun. And while I am a huge storyfag, and do think you can tell a good story in any setting, RT is not the fucking people to do it, and Oum was definitely not the one to do it.
That's why White Queen, while it kind of...fizzled, is exactly what RWBY needs if it wants to be taken seriously. Set up the world, then get the fuck out of the way and let the talented people do it. Edit: I meant Ice Queendom here, I am genuinely retarded, please forgive.
It's admittedly Oum's fault for not having every hand in his work. As much as it's impossible to have your hand in every part of something you make, the best know how to cycle through to take care and understand just about any topic regarding it.
As I said, Monty should had taken a few years longer to understand writing and to know how to build his world beyond just painting Remnant on a napkin with condiments (nothing against being scrappy when you have artistic inspiration). I don't know if this would had been for better or for worse, but at least that way RWBY would be his own beloved spawn of creative work within his vision than what shitshow he left for Kerry and Miles to make.
Also, RWBY isn't "turn your brain off" fun. Dirty Pair Flash is turn your brain off fun. Wild Cardz is turn your brain off fun. Gowcaizer is turn your brain off fun. Oedo 808 is turn your brain off fun. Even they gave a shit enough to make enough of a world for their series and have a general gist of what it wanted to be, and only come short because of lack of further serious/devoted creative investiture. RWBY however has no clue of what it wants to be, and just wings it while using "rule of cool" as an excuse. It thoughtlessly tries to jam in "every" cool anime concept, theme, and idea into one ball of an idea, when all it just comes out as a feebly crumbling incoherent ignorant mess. It doesn't try to make these anime story themes its own, instead trying to simp out to the 2000s sensationalism of the anime boom in the States rather than anything inspirational or poignant from it.
If I want cute sexy girls and women jumping into the fray of combat, I'll pick up an action JRPG or watch Symphogear or something. Which comes back to my raving problem: RWBY suffers from every flaw of wannabe/imitation anime that has come out from every aspiring anime fan or weeaboo, ever. It stands in the shadows of its competition and thinks that battery powered strobe lights and a crappy smartphone makes it a party or a rave. When it presents the aforementioned "cool anime element", it's always presented unoriginally trite or something we've seen done better before. When it presents something unique to its work, it's always underdeveloped, undershot, or undercooked, which only hurts itself even more. If RWBY as it is, not even Ice Queendom, was ever put through the grinder of the anime and manga industry in Japan, it would had immediately become fertilizer through the screening process and force the creators to make it better for the next time around, which is the only compliment I have to say about this.
tl;dr it suffers from any piece of lolcow level of work I've ever witnessed, which all share the same major gaping flaw: they don't try or strive hard enough. Even shit requires you to eat and squeeze your sphincter muscles. This is just filth.
