The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

Their "documentary" is on netflix now. It's so boring I couldn't stand more than 5 minutes. The editing is also incredibly retarded. The music is ridiculous (stressful sad piano).

And speaking of which, they failed to deliver interesting infos for netflix, because of course they keep whining over nothing.
Netflix and other deals such as spotify, are in jeopardy.

They could be asked to refund the outrageous amount of money they got for providing no real work.

Right, one of the photos of “paparazzi” was for a Harry Potter movie premiere. They also used images of paparazzi chasing Kate/Catherine and hounding Chelsy Davy. Hilarious.

I don’t have Netflix, so I can’t imagine I’ll go to the work of watching, but I am very anticipatory for how the royal family responds. I also can’t wait for Harry’s book to drop which will apparently significantly contradict the Netflix show.

Will they lose their titles? Will they have to sell their mansion? How broke are they? When will they divorce??

• Another photo was supposed to be of the press chasing them and it turned out to be the press chasing (I believe) Katie Price (some kind of chav who is famous for reasons I don't understand).
• Yet another is of Harry being papped but if you zoom out, the pic was of him and a former girlfriend.
• A press photo they presented as taken without permission was actually taken as part of a press pool and was taken with permission-- I think it was Robert Jobson who posted about that one on twitter.

All that stuff was just in the trailers.

Spoiler: Some info and sperg on the first 3 episodes

I'm typing all this from memory... During the actual episodes they showed a bunch of supposedly mean tweets about them, but all the names were whited out and avatars blurred out, so for all I know they could have been faked like stuff in the trailers AND the fake headlines in the Oprah interviews. They faked being in a car with paps chasing them and it was boring and ridiculous-- you could see people outside the car not-reacting to the invisible paps whizzing by. (Body Language Guy shows this in a video here.)

Meghan made a fool of herself exaggerating a curtsy to the queen and everybody is pissed about it, saying she was mocking a 90+ year old woman who was dying of bone cancer and British tradition. They and their guest commentators trashed the commonwealth calling it Empire 2.0 and Meg claimed to have never used or heard the word nigger before... I don't remember which or if it was both. I think she said she never had race issues before she went to Britain.

The only thing that I didn't know about or expect was Meghan's sister Samantha Markle's daughter Ashleigh. Sam has MS and lost custody of her kids during her divorce to their paternal grandparents. Ashleigh apparently hates Sam for this. I have no idea if it's deserved. Meghan befriended Ashleigh when Ashleigh started talking to Sam again, and I guess managed to drive a wedge back between them. I'm not sure what the timeline was on this.

Sam has been speaking out about Meghan probably since the engagement. So in I think the 3rd episode Ashleigh was interviewed and Sam got trashed. Ashleigh claims the BRF told Meghan not to invite Ashleigh because of Sam, and I think Meghan is the one who told her. Ashleigh a lawyer... immigration I think and she seems to actually believe this. She must have gotten her JD out of a Cracker Jack box. I don't know who the bad guys are here but this chick is being used.

There were a few glimpses of the kids but nothing where you could identify them by looking at anything in those episodes. Next week is supposedly about the BRF. I saw that she pissed off one of the commonwealth countries with the Empire 2.0 BS, Gabon (SP?) and there's going to be something about it in the Daily Express tomorrow. They also used footage from Diana's 1997 Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, supposedly without permission.
