It's a known technique to make your thumbnail more eye-catching, like overlaying big red arrows and circles. That's why you see a shit ton of YouTubers doing it. Even a subtle change in proportion that makes a face look "off" will cause people to immediately notice it, more than the dumbest expression you can possibly capture in a regular selfie.

Maybe he decided to go with a hick look on purpose, but it's so thematically off and barely-present that I'm guessing he pulled it off the usual checklist of thumbnail tips. Though come to think of it, making painfully uncreative thumbnails sounds more like something his artist wife would do without flinching.

I'm preaching to the choir here but I still really miss pre-Adpocalypse iDubbbz. I just stumbled upon and rewatched some of the old Bad Unboxing and Gentlemen's Challenge videos with Filthy Frank and Maxmoefoe and genuinely laughed out loud again.
