Nevertheless, the cop found himself in that situation, and he didn't have to just die because department training and policy put him there. It's not an ideal scenario but he's permitted to defend himself.

The situation could have just as easily gone the other way, and frankly the resident would've been equally justified in shooting first. Probably not if she saw that he was a uniformed cop, but it was dark outside and he was pointing a flashlight in her eyes, so if she'd survived the encounter and claimed she didn't see the uniform, I'd have believed her. Either of them presented a reasonably perceived imminent deadly force threat to the other.

That said, in fairness to Nick, he seems to legitimately have no idea what the Elijah Schaffer situation is about. That makes me think that Elijah lied about it behind the scenes, probably telling Nick that he was fired for "having an affair with a coworker" or something along those lines.

I think it's simpler to assume that Nick hasn't even spoken to Elijah about this, but hasn't seen any evidence so he won't jump on the band wagon. Nick doesn't burn bridges (at least not publicly) unless he's been publicly attacked in a manner that he can't look past.

If it were that clear-cut he wouldn't even be on trial. It's going to be a jury who decides that.

I don't know if a trial is a good yardstick.

We saw how baseless the prosecution of Rittenhouse was.

I still think he's getting convicted of manslaughter, though. The emotional argument plus the ambiguity about unlawful deadly force will probably get him.
