Flags & Vexillology

The Reichskriegsflagge of WW2 is just the best flag, and that excellence in design and aesthetic matching the uniforms, iconography and weaponry of the Third Reich accentuates the Tristesse of it all, that everything went to shit because Hitler turned to be unspeakably corrupt, tyrannical (against his own men and people), and incompetent (involving Germany with three other world powers simultaneously).

Black Pigeon Speaks did a flag ranking, but pretty much hinted at ranking the Reichskriegsflagge equally high, but, citing youtube censorship poliices even five years, just puts the USSR flag in its place at number four....

Not everyone is familiar with the older flag from the Kingdom of Greece. I think the little crown is kind of goofy looking, because to me at least it loosk like any other crown. I much prefer the newer flag.

I like the Saxony flag a lot

If you survey current and historical flags, it is interesting to me that green is so under-utilized. A lot of flags that do use green are not exactly appealing, and most are from Africa or the African diaspora, which is most unfortunate. I do think a darker, forest green looks better, but should not be used with red, but with white and black and maybe some gold or yellow trim. This variant of the Flag of Saxony does violate modern rules discouraging seals or coat of arms, but I really like it.
Someone else posted the flag of the Republic of Spain, which is notable because it uses purple, which very few flags do now or have done historically

The flag of France prior to the revolution does not do it for me.

The flag of Quebec takes the same icons and colors and makes it a very good flag. Small differences. can make all the difference...

I like that it's also based on a canting arms, which is when you use heraldic symbols based on the name of the place or family. A good example of this is the use of a Lion and Castle to represent Castile and Leon.

The Jolly Roger is a classic flag, simple in design and gave a clear message to sailors at the time.

Not all flags flown by pirates during the age of piracy bore the same skull and crossbones design, more notable pirates would fly variations of the Jolly Roger.

A couple of Bartholomew Roberts flags.

its because green was considered a poor people's color, it was up there with brown and grey, earthy tones that were for peasants, the flip side is that purple also isn't used because of expenses same with black. Also even if these countries/nations were poor they didn't want to look poor, a lot of times tracing colors back to them happening to be on sale when they were deciding which ones to use. the redcoats of the UK are that way because of a sale on red during the civil war. its also probably why you see a fuck load more places not play by the rules the more recent the countries are, like you said with africa.

i always thought the Hezbollah flag was pretty sweet, but again it plays hard to trends of the time. thats actually the saddest part, outside of a few men in the reich, almost everyone that makes decisions have dogshit taste, most of them are Marvel-tier when it comes to what they like and just can't make good art.

The Brazil flag is pretty sweet.
thats such a weird flag, apparently the stars correlate to the night sky on the day of the founding if you use a specific model of globe and they changed it over the years when the science said the stars aligned differently. maybe its because of the stereotype of brazil but essentially a screenshot of the night sky based on a globe model is not what fits the country.

So I was wondering if anyone recognizes the historical value of this tattoo. At first I thought it was the flag of Croatia's seal. But apparently they always start with a red field instead of white because nazi's used white first. Every time I look up the history of this potential nazi tattoo, there are no sources with the information.

I love the Candian/American Friendship flag, but I hear it's a white power symbol? Ugh I can't even keep up anymore, I just want to hang up cool flags.

Just saw the Seychelles' flag for the first time. I kind of dig it, the starburst pattern reminds me of the iconic Japanese "rising sun" flag. Anyone else have opinions?

Its probably my all time favorite.

I think a lot of people misinterpret this flag. imagine all the stripes are the same width, and its 20 feet above your head, and its running off toward the horizon. Its got this beautiful duality where its like expressive and happy when you view it the plain way, but when you see how its a symbol for progress it has that meaning as well. Super cool design.

Here’s some more flags I like.

The Gagauz Flag, they’re a majority Orthodox Christian group of Turkic Speakers in Moldova and Romania.

The language is Croat, and the tattoo does resemble the Croatian coat of arms checkerboard. Croatia was allied with the Nazi's in WWII, they were called Ustaše.

The top portion of the tattoo is "Nema predaje" which means no surrender. I can make out the bottom left, "Evo zore," translates to here comes the dawn. So I'm assuming the remainder is "evo dana" which translates to here comes the day. Evo zore, evo dana, was a common marching song used by the Ustaše during the war.

So yeah, it's a nazi tattoo.

The Balkans generally have good flags that represent their nations well. Croatia has a pretty sweet flag also, traditional pan-slavic colors and a dope coat of arms.

The Croats love that checkerboard and have used it since they were a kingdom, and during some more questionable times.

The national flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina, while it isn't terrible, it's not great either. The three points of the triangle are supposed to represent the three religions of the region, Islam, Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy; or the three ethnic groups, Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs. I'm not a fan of the colors used and the design just seems kind of lazy, maybe that was done intentionally as to not have a flag that is more representative of one group over another considering how much conflict has happened in that region.

However, compared against some of the alternatives that were proposed, this might have been the best choice. The exception is the last one which I think is slightly better then the current flag.
