Flags & Vexillology

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
I’m quite fond of some English county flags::

One of the criticisms of the American flag is that it's too complex. The main reason for this is the number of stars:

These designs are nice and simpler, but the stars serve a purpose: they represent every part of the country equally and flex on (most) other nations by saying "our country is 50x bigger than yours". Thirteen star and stripe designs redundantly glorify only 13 states. But you could change the stripes, one for each region (so five or seven or three):

This would've made a cool US flag, pity the Founding Fathers didn't think of it before the Confederates.

Tuva

Tuva (Тыва Республика) was a (barely recognized) country from 1921 to 1944, when they were absorbed by the Soviet Union. They are currently a part of the Russian Federation, and have managed to produce a few decent and some really ugly flags through the years.

Let's start off with the first flag.

Overall, i think it looks decent, in that "small country that nobody cares about" kind of way. I rather like the light blue color, and the religious symbol gives it some personality. The ribbon is distracting though.

Tuva would declare itself independent in 1921, and use a few unofficial flags before settling on a real one in 1926

Also decent. I prefer the first one, it keeps some of the blue and the prayer wheel but loses the ribbon. The second version is probably the better one, though. easier on the eyes.

In 1926 buddhism was on its way out and communism was in, hence the classic "cluttered commie emblem on red background" look of the next 5 flags.

The prayer wheel sticks around but is covered by the now-standard commie emblem. The writing does it no favors either. i really don't like this one 🙁

A new constitution changed the flag in 1930. two different reconstructions exist.

These flags include some light reading for the working masses of the mongolian tuvan taiga. The emblems are OK as far as commie design goes, but the flags themselves are nothing special

In 1935 it was time to change the flag yet again. There was a slight change to the emblem in 1939, but it's so minor that it isn't worth the bandwidth to upload it. Just imagine that the second version has one line of tuvan text instead of two.

Tuva 7.jpg

What a trash fire. The sun, the borders of Tuva, a sickle and horseman with lance (or a fishing rod) above some text. It reminds me of some of the shittier US state flags. Utter shit.

Tuva later had six different USSR state flags. all of these are red rectangles with the republic's initials (with or without hammer and sickle), and from 1962 onwards, the Russian SFSR flag with the republic name added. They're all pretty bad.

tUVA 13.jpg

Boring, just like all the other autonomous socialist republic flags. The earlier versions have less text and are even less interesting.

1991 comes along, the USSR dies and Russia rises from the ashes. The flag ditches the communist look and goes back to its roots. kind of. Technically they have had two flags since 1992, but the only difference is the ratio. the 1992-2002 flag is 1:2, and the current flag is 2:3

...and it's like a bland South African flag. I'm both glad that they reuse the colors from the very first flag, but also immensely disappointed that this was the best they came up with. Get the prayer wheel back in!

Opinions? I vastly prefer the first two-three flags they had. it kind of degenerated into commie shit after that, and that got boring real quick.

If two more states joined the union, you would have 52 states. 52 is evenly divisible by 13, so you could have a vertical blue strip on the entire left part of the flag, with a grid of 52 stars. 4 columns and 13 rows, lining up with the red and white stripes. It would have a pleasing symmetry to it.

Anti-war Russians in Europe have created this new flag to represent pacifist and pro-Western Russia, creatively called in English the "white-blue-white".

The center stripe is azure unlike the Russian flag's royal blue. There's more symbolism to it than the obvious, it resembles the flag of Veliky Novogorod, which is an ancient city in Russia that had the country's first democratic government in the 12th century.

Thematically it's not bad, it looks like Finland and Estonia's flags and all three look very pacifistic.

In the same vein as Liberian county flags, here's some Asafo flags, early 19th century West African militia groups of Fante tribesmen, who were backed by the British for some reason.

First the giant fish ready to eat a boat that is simultaneously a sailing ship and a steamer.

And then a cross between a lion and an otter confronts a ball pit, which is already occupied by 2 cats.

And this one can't even get the Union Jack right

And this one reminds me of a meme that I can't find right now.
