Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

Right in the feels. This is me with pretty much every game i was hyped for these past couple of years, with very, very few exceptions. I guess i am either too burned out on vidya currently or it's really time for a new hobby. I hope i'm somewhat back to normal at least once Ishin releases.
That's what Musou / Dynasty Warriors is for. If I feel burned out, but at the same time I'm itching for something; fucking mindless killing, can turn like 90% of my brain off and just operate on instinct/muscle memory. Whether it's OG Musou, Samurai Warriors, Gundam, Berserk, Attack on Titan, whatever; turn the brain off and get the largest fucking body count I can.

Grinding in an RPG can be like that. 97% of the time grinding makes me want to kill myself, but somehow in certain games I'll sometimes get into a groove and keep going.

It can be, given the right context.

But the point was that that kind of plodding, attritional combat is antithetical to how Star Wars has always presented Jedi. It's like making, say, a Spider-Man first-person shooter - the game can be fine, but it's still probably going to be a jarring experience that doesn't really fit the character or what people want out of a Spider-Man game.

That wasn't the case for most games. Only more obscure ones.

It was big deal for publishers too. You no longer had to print and ship CDs to get your product across.

I see Microsoft Live brought up, but that was always seen as a shitty service; you basically paid for the online of games you just bought.

It literally does. It's my copy, I can sell it, I can wipe my ass with it and I don't have to ask Steam's servers for permission to do it. The courts have affirmed these rights time and time again.

Pretty much any EA games CDs are just links to download and install from EA Origin lol.

Yea basically. But it wasn't that big. I can name 1 or maybe 2 games that did that.
If you're talking about the shareware model - it used to be pretty big for indies and smaller devs.
This is one thing I do think Steam improved: It gave a lot of exposure to indies.

Of course none of us do, but that just became a thing that happens with or without Steam. My favorite example is Battleborn, a game with single-player components that demands a connection to its servers anyway, that no longer works. The disc even has a big ol' middle finger to really drive that fact home:

It really should be illegal to not allow single-player content to be accessible if you fuckin' have the game data right there, but there aren't any laws around digital ownership yet. It's fuckin' bullshit but I guess that's just one of the many trials a relatively new form of media has to go through.
 
People who complain about fighting game rosters being full of reskins and say there's no diversity in character movesets are entitled and gay.
If I'm playing a Naruto/DB game, I don't need a 3rd tier character with less than 20 minutes of screentime from the show to have a super original moveset. I just like their character design, getting to use a special move and the fact I can even play them in the first place. And usually they're not exact mirrors or even that similar unless you're being autistically specific about cross-referencing other characters. I'll deal with some reskins and be happy with my 100+ character game and you can have your 13 member roster from 2003 if it really means that much to you.
 
I just hate the idea that making enemies have massive health bars that take far too long to kill is anything other than lazy game design, and for Star Wars specifically, it's geniunely contradictory to how Jedi fight in general as when presented with mundane enemies "the Jedi cut them down like they're butter, and they really are pretty useless." The idea that some random bugs can be anything more than a momentary annoyance to any Jedi with even the slightest training is fucking laughable.

This is why I liked the Force Unleashed games so much. Instead of a weak loser, you're (in the second one, literally) slicing big waves of enemies to pieces. The challenge is more about not dying from the absolute shitstorm of enemies being thrown at you.

Opinion: Any time a game is called "beautiful" or a "masterpiece" especially if it's by game journos, it just means "depressing as shit." That "Brothers" game was just depressing waste of time and if I knew the ending going in, I would not have played it.

People play War Thunder and one of the game's main selling points is that it's a tank/plane sim where you can take people out in a single hit if you get a good shot off, short time to kill doesn't make a game inherently bad and there are lots of people who geniunely enjoy that style of gameplay.

Also the old Assassins Creed games where you're an immortal god of parrying are infinitely more fun than whatever the new ones are trying to be, you can't even instagib people with muskets anymore.

I met a girl who played Kingdom Hearts for the story. I have no idea how but that's a thought that exists, apparently.
Kingdom Hearts' story seems like something a lot of awkward teenage girls would be really into.
The less hygienic ones would definitely be "shipping" Sora and his edgy friend. I forgot his name. The Sasuke one.
 
I have to assume "I like it for the story" was shorthand for "One of the cute anime boys is my husbando and I want to see more of him."

She was a very nice person but she was very much... "that". Short hair and all.
We eventually talked about anime and she finally hit the checkmark when I recommended Re:Zero and she essentially said "I don't know if I can watch that one because of the controversy".
Possibly on the spectrum pixie girl who probably identified as a toaster and can't like things that might get her in trouble online. A modern white woman is what I'm saying.

I only played the first and some of the second way back in the day. I remember the second one starting to get whacky and everyone having names like Riggenx and you find out their true identity is Nigger or something.

They are pretty simple hack-and-slash games (aside from optional bosses) but I enjoyed 'em. Good music. Apparently Utada Hikaru, who did the theme song for Kingdom Hearts, came out as a non-binary they/them recently. Possibly the first Japanese woman to pull that stunt. People used to wonder why her mom killed herself. People no longer wonder that.

I think a game either pushes your buttons or it doesn't.
Alien Isolation doesn't have you punching a rock, so it's closer to a classic horror game than most.
At the same time, it has elements which turned me off (while watching lets-plays) to the point where I gave it a pass, and one of them is pretty unique to me. Still, it's my money to spend, and I'm in no way obliged to play the thing.
