Mario Bros. Set to Jump to Big Screen in Movie Deal with Universal’s Illumination - Paging Movie Bob, Paging Movie Bob...

The directors worked on Teen Titans Go! To the Movies and the screenwriter is Matthew Fogel (no relation to Jared Fogle), who only worked on the more recent Minions movie and The Lego Movie 2. Soooooo...

Yeah, that makes sense. Literal bottom of the barrel children's entertainment, but what's funny is the story would vastly improve with just a few more rewrites. Bowser should be a more active villain in the story and they should drop the Chosen One plot, give the Power Star more urgency and, honestly, just dedicate itself to the Luigi damsel-in-distress plot. It makes the story cleaner, more engaging.

Okay, so I’m slightly concerned, but as long as they do not neuter Mario too much and not make Peach into a Daisy clone then it’s all right with me.

So this anon claims to have seen the movie, his replies seemed to be quite adamant about it too, and my gut instinct tells me he's legit based on how other legit leakers on 4chan have acted.

Sounds quite underwhelming.
I expected a lot of things, but not super mario going full isekai...

EDIT: I should've kept reading, the care-bear yoshis were even less expected.

I never got around to seeing the second lego movie but I heard it was till good albeit a bit less so than the first one, and the recent minions movie was better than the despicable me sequels but nowhere near the level of the first movie in terms of quality. Cautiously optimistic for it but studio meddling also may fuck the thing over.
I still don't fucking understand why they with their infinite budget decided to fucking make the castle based on the n64 one and only make it a single super simplified room from Odyssey on top of some fucking grass orb. Thats kinda really half assing it in a sense, imagine how much "I CLAPPED WHEN ISAW THE THING!!!" trailer reactions they could have fucking gotten from a big budget Mario 64 courtyard.

New clip is up:

- It’s been said to death, but Chris Pratt barely sounds like Mario, even if the film creators were inspired by the old Mario games from the 80’s and 90’s.

- This entire clip looks like Super Mario Odyssey: The Movie, not The New Super Mario Bros. Movie. (I know they were trying to go with Super Mario 3D Land due to being a nod to Super Mario Land for the Game Boy, but I just could not help but notice it.)

- Keegan Michael Key is legit over exaggerating the voice of Toad. Not even video game Toad sounds like Hollywood version of Toad in that movie clip.

It‘s a short clip, so let’s not judge too much. Either way, it’s just okay at best. Seeing Chris voice the role of Mario here is reminding me of his voiceover takes from The Lego Movie, and I think that is the role that the people in Illumination is going for.

You forgot to mention one of the directors was the lead storyboard artist for the Drawn Together Movie

coincidentally enough, Wreck it Ralph was directed by one of the guys who also worked on that show.

New clip is up:

Still saying my peace here, Keegan fits as Toad way better than Pratt does as Mario. I do like Brian Tyler's own brief Mario 64 composition, that was very cool. Visually, it's very good and I'm happy Illumination captured the Mario lore nicely based on the 2-minute clip I've seen, and it's quite bizarre really.

Speaking of Pratt as Mario, here's vidya autist Ryan Bloom's take on it:
I am in the camp that I couldn’t really do a whole movie of Charles Martinet’s Mario voice. That’s not to say that I hate it or think it’s wrong or want it changed, I love his Mario voice. But mainly in the small doses we get in games. I know he got his start as the floating Mario head where he would banter with guests at E3 for hours, but I think that’s different than movie dialog. I stand by my thought that Chris Pratt only got the job because he’s the “hot” actor of the moment. He probably won’t be terrible, but he’s a deeply uninteresting choice.

I wonder if a movie could be written around the joke that Mario and Luigi don’t actually talk very much and still mainly communicate in little quips. Like, keep Jack Black as Bowser, keep Anya-Taylor Joy as Peach, etc. but have Mario and Luigi be directly analogous to how they deliver dialog in games, where it’s mostly short little “oh yeah!” “mama-mia!” “I’m-a tired!” barks. But, I mean, the thing to keep in mind about things like that is if it’s something obvious, then of course they thought of it and decided it wasn’t working. I’m sure they pitched a version of that movie where Martinet stayed the voice of Mario and this is what we got.

Like I said back when Idris Elba was cast as Knuckles, that’s just Hollywood. Names put butts in seats. I wonder about Pratt, though. His star is falling hard and fast among a certain set of people, and every time he turns up in interviews or whatever lately he seems absolutely miserable. I think the fact that people are sniffing out his politics even though he isn’t doing anything wrong is really starting to bother him. I’d almost feel bad for him except, y'know, he’s barely doing anything to prove anyone wrong besides just saying “Nuh-uh! I’m nice!!!!”

The original live-action Mario movie could have been really cool. The initial concept was two plumbers get sucked into a fantasy world and have to save a princess. It was described as a cross between The Princess Bride and Alice in Wonderland: This was the movie Bob Hoskins originally agreed to.

Then they hired two retards who wanted to do a subterranean cyberpunk movie with humanoid dinosaurs and everything quickly devolved into shit.

Anyway, I hope this one is better. Good luck Mr. Pratt.

it helped that Sonic 2 treated Knuckles way more seriously than most of the games do, while this Movie doesn't seem to be treating Mario very seriously.
Plus, Jeff Fowler has been a diehard fan of Sonic, and has even directed the Shadow the Hedgehog opening cutscene (just 15 years before his first Sonic movie even came out).

Now that I am back, I want to give my thoughts on Mario.

Chris Pratt doesn’t fit. I don’t give a shit if he does the Italian accent or not, the main issue is that he barely feels like Mario. Charlie Day as Luigi works as the actors unhinged performances surprisingly fit the cowardly weirdo that is Luigi. Luigi doesn’t need an accent as the voice fits. Pratt sounds miserable in his performance. He has no energy whatsoever, which feels wrong when Mario is typically a character that jumps into action. Pratt is totally phoning in his performances nowadays as both this and Guardians make him look angry and depressed with no energy anymore. The rest of the cast seems to be having fun, and as such they fit their roles with Black being the obvious stand out.

Speaking of Pratt as Mario, here's vidya autist Ryan Bloom's take on it:
I get his point, but I think Mario and Luigi should talk, Luigi especially so. The two just need good voices. Luigi got perfect casting, while Mario got a depressed actor.

Seriously, I don’t need a voice change for Luigi, this works perfectly:

Badass warrior Peach coolly flipping her halberd around is the first dealbreaker-esque element so far. It's otherwise been okay at least. I guess we should just be thankful she's not black or a lesbian or something...
What is there to be mad about, don't you know this is how she has always been? You just need to read this obscure Mario comic from 30 years ago. #NotATrueMarioFan

Real talk, I hate how Peach is a girl-boss in the film. I don't hate her being competent, I just hate that her and Mario had their personalities ripped out for generic Hollywood ones. Mario is the reluctant Hero who will beat the odds and Peach is his hyper competent trainer that will bemoan the loser they have to teach, yada..yada..

Mario should be way more adventurous and Peach more of a ditzy dumbass. For the film, Peach lacks her bumbling around and usual sweetness so far and Mario seems too much like he wants to give up. Neither is as fun as their game counterparts.

Meanwhile Bowser and Luigi, hell even DK couldn't be more perfect. Bowser is the right amount of intimidating and goofy, DK is a jackass, and Luigi is his usual cowardly self. Even Toad, who is definitely Captain Toad, feels correct. Why are the two main leads so off feeling?

BIGOT! We NEED to make Peach a girlboss because we live in a PATRIARCHEEEEEEEEE, and sweetness and bumbling around are 1950s housewife stereotypes! Also, it's nice to see Peach be in more of an active role than she is in the games!
*you bring up Mario 3D World, the RPGs, the sports games, etc.*
THOSE DON'T COUNT REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Since this topic has come up again, allow me to give my hot take:

"Girlboss" Peach makes sense.

After I've given it some thought and looked back over what we've been shown, Peach being the way she is makes sense given where the story is going.

Think about it: Peach is the sole ruler of the mushroom kingdom and has to look after all of these seemingly harmless toad creatures. There's word of this Bowser guy going around and ransacking kingdoms to get his hands on these powerful macguffins (power stars) in order to accomplish god-knows-what.

With that in mind, why wouldn't she take this situation seriously and choose not be the ditzy lovable pretty princess we're used to?
