The weights (signal strength) of various signaling pathways vary due to how often they are triggered, which seems to be encoding statistical information to me. There is also biasing in brain structure and signaling pathways due to evolution, but again, that can be understood mechanically and statistically.

Now, I admit that the complexity of the human brain, in both sheer number of neurons/synapses, and structure (complicated feedback loops etc...) isn't being matched by current machines, nor are they competitive in the energy efficiency department, where current machine learning is probably a million times worse.

Still, I don't see any fundamental barrier to being able to produce mechanized thought, unless you believe in supernatural origins to human consciousness, which is quite the exceptional idea.

Brains are highly parallel in ways that I don't think computers would be able to match. Neurons can die, grow, form new connections, etc.

An individual CPU core might be much faster computationally than some small volume of neurons. But the brain is a much larger volume of all those neurons connected. I don't think a single CPU can simulate that, but even if you add more CPUs, it takes up a bigger volume so you just add latency between them.

I don't think it's impossible to simulate thought with silicon, I just think you could only do it with incredible latency. (Imagine having lag between portions of your brain.)

I do think animal thought and sentience are mechanistic. I just think that the most effective way to implement it is with glucose powered biological cells. I don't think silicon could match the parallelism. Silicon probably has its advantages elsewhere.

I do think Moore's law is coming to an end. We're hitting physical limits where our transistors are us sandwiching individual atoms next to each other. I think we'll keep that going for a bit, and maybe we'll pull out a few new tricks to keep the train going, but ultimately we'll hit physical walls.

Personally having played with a handful of ‘ai’ models in python I agree with the notion that we’re probably not ever going to wind up with human-level intelligence from a machine, but I think we’re going to have realistic human-level autism from them within short order and I simultaneously look forward to and dread it. The power dissipation of an IC is usually not calculated directly but uses an intermediate factor - Dynamic Capacitance (Cdyn). Since the power dissipation on a capacitor in AC is something like 0.5fCV^2 (don't quote me on that, been a while), you can correct the "frequency" with an "activity factor" 0.5afCV^2 leaving you with a*C which is the glorious Cdyn.
All this long preamble to say long lines have fuckhuge Cdyn. They also have to be made in the higher layers of metals otherwise their resistance is too high. You know what consumes the most power in a chip? The fucking clock mesh.
It's true that 3d architectures will save you a lot of the problems relating to the massive signal busses and will also allow you to bring modules which can sit on the same clock generator way closer together, but I don't know how you'll dissipate the heat from the clock network itself. Changing to a 3d structure will make heat dissipation even harder.
In comparison, I think the human brain is sparser and operates at a way lower "frequency". It's also completely asynchronized, while IC's aren't.
