Tony is OBSESSED with LOTT. If you took a shot every time he mentioned it in this 6 minute clip (the first minute or so is the channel begging for donations) you'd be wasted. It is almost as if this one "hate account" is all he has in regards to his "research". To hear him tell it, LOTT is an account with Sorosian influence and power, as if Chaya has a fascist army at her disposal ready to bomb children's hospitals and drag shows at a moments notice. He quit his job to make reaction content for ONE account? Brilliant career move Tony!
I generated a transcript of the audio. It looks like "Libs of TikTok" was mentioned 7 times, 6 of which were in a 2 minute span.
00:00.000 --> 00:05.680
One of the top stories on Marketplace this year has been inflation. It's a major force in our
00:05.680 --> 00:11.040
country and in the world right now. And here at Marketplace, we're not just seeing its effects
00:11.040 --> 00:17.120
in our coverage. Donations from you and other listeners are an important part of our nonprofit
00:17.120 --> 00:24.000
budget. And right now, those donations are down. We understand not everyone can contribute right now.
00:24.000 --> 00:29.120
But if you are in a position to donate, we need you. Step up and give what you can at
00:29.120 --> 00:38.880
marketplace.org slash give tech and thanks. How online hate speech turns into real world violence
00:38.880 --> 00:44.560
and legislation. From American Public Media, this is Marketplace Tech. I'm Kimberly Adams.
00:44.560 --> 01:00.320
We have far too many examples in recent years of hate speech, sparking riots, mobs,
01:00.320 --> 01:06.480
and individual attacks. One group at particular risk is the transgender community. This year,
01:06.480 --> 01:12.000
at least 35 people in the trans community were fatally shot or killed by other violent means,
01:12.000 --> 01:18.400
according to the Human Rights Campaign. And a recent report from the HRC Foundation found
01:18.400 --> 01:25.440
highly organized online attacks against hospitals and health care providers in 21 states targeting
01:25.440 --> 01:30.800
facilities and doctors that provide gender affirming care. Erin Reed is a legislative
01:30.800 --> 01:36.160
researcher and trans rights activist. She's been following these patterns for the last three years.
01:36.160 --> 01:41.520
What we've seen and what I've seen is an increase in those school boards or those hospitals or those
01:41.520 --> 01:46.320
administrators that get targeted on online platforms, then receiving in real life,
01:46.320 --> 01:51.760
actual violence. I have seen a number of gender affirming care programs at hospitals paused or
01:51.760 --> 01:57.680
shut down because of the violent threats that people are receiving. And these threats often
01:57.680 --> 02:03.520
first show up on our online platforms through accounts like Libs of TikTok, Matt Walsh, etc.
02:03.520 --> 02:07.280
This materializes into what I believe is real world harm.
02:07.280 --> 02:12.560
I just want to get a little specific with what you're talking about. It looks like some of these
02:12.560 --> 02:17.920
online attacks are focused on hospitals and schools, because, you know, in hospitals,
02:17.920 --> 02:23.280
they might be doing what medical officials view as necessary, which is gender affirming care.
02:23.280 --> 02:28.320
And schools, on the other hand, which maybe will make decisions about bathrooms and who gets to
02:28.320 --> 02:35.600
participate in what sports. Yes, yes, exactly. So what we normally will see is one of these accounts
02:35.600 --> 02:40.160
target a hospital because it has a gender affirming care program. These are medical
02:40.160 --> 02:44.240
decisions made between doctors and their patients following the best medical guidelines that are out
02:44.240 --> 02:50.000
there. Nonetheless, whenever an account targets the hospital, rather than going through the
02:50.000 --> 02:54.640
political process, we do see extra political action and violence against these groups of
02:54.640 --> 02:59.520
people. And same thing with school districts. Very good example. This would be in Keel, Wisconsin.
02:59.520 --> 03:07.520
The school districts in Keel, Wisconsin, were investigating the bullying and harassment of a
03:07.520 --> 03:14.240
trans student under Title IX. And as a result of that, it got blown up on Twitter. We had multiple
03:14.240 --> 03:19.680
hate accounts say, look at what's going on. Title IX is being used against people for misgendering
03:19.680 --> 03:25.840
a trans person. And then as a result of that, Keel, Wisconsin, many of the schools in the town
03:25.840 --> 03:31.200
received bomb threats over the course of a month. Schools were shut down in Keel, Wisconsin,
03:31.200 --> 03:40.000
made news. And after that, the Title IX complaints were dropped. So we do see real world violence and
03:40.000 --> 03:46.880
violent responses come from digital hate coming in our digital platforms. And what are the platforms
03:46.880 --> 03:54.480
doing about all this? Prior to the Musk takeover of Twitter, we did see some inroads being made.
03:54.480 --> 04:01.680
We saw discussions being had around the role of hate accounts in spurring this violence in real
04:01.680 --> 04:07.200
life. I know, for instance, the account Libs of TikTok was banned from Twitter for about a week
04:07.200 --> 04:12.640
shortly after sending a hate mob against Vanderbilt Children's Hospital and Boston Children's
04:12.640 --> 04:18.800
Hospital. And while we don't know the exact cause of why she was banned, whenever she returned,
04:18.800 --> 04:24.720
she had stopped tweeting about the hospitals. And so this was like a sign of hope that maybe
04:24.720 --> 04:30.960
things were going to change, but that's all gone now. And in the post-Musk takeover of Twitter,
04:30.960 --> 04:36.320
we have now seen Elon Musk step in to defend Libs of TikTok. We've seen Elon Musk step in
04:36.320 --> 04:41.760
to defend Shopify for hosting Libs of TikTok and the products that Libs of TikTok sells calling
04:41.760 --> 04:48.960
LGBTQ people groomers. And so it's this kind of rhetoric, the grooming rhetoric against LGBTQ
04:48.960 --> 04:52.720
people, the attacks on children's hospitals, the attacks on school districts that no longer can be
04:52.720 --> 04:59.040
reported and no longer will be removed, and in fact are being defended by some of the rich CEOs
04:59.040 --> 05:07.280
who own the platforms. Can you give a concrete example of how some of this online rhetoric has
05:07.280 --> 05:14.720
translated into actual policy? So in Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, we first saw Libs of TikTok
05:15.440 --> 05:21.680
blast Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. Matt Walsh then took up the attacks on Vanderbilt
05:21.680 --> 05:28.080
Children's Hospital and decided to have a rally in Nashville, Tennessee. And it was essentially
05:28.080 --> 05:33.200
a rally to shut down the gender affirming care program at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. This
05:33.200 --> 05:42.960
two-pronged approach of political rallying plus violent threats then led to one of the first bills
05:43.600 --> 05:47.760
targeting all gender affirming care in the state of Tennessee. And not just surgeries,
05:47.760 --> 05:52.160
we're talking puberty blockers, hormone therapy, et cetera. And so we are seeing this sort of
05:52.160 --> 05:59.680
translation of Libs of TikTok, Matt Walsh, in-person rallies as well as in-person violent
05:59.680 --> 06:06.400
threats, and then legislation in Tennessee. Are there any good examples of the reverse
06:06.400 --> 06:12.880
happening, online actions or organizing changing legislation that the LGBTQ community sees as
06:12.880 --> 06:19.360
harmful? Absolutely. There is a lot of very powerful digital activism that people like
06:19.360 --> 06:24.240
myself try to lead. In Ohio, there have been multiple anti-trans bills that have been proposed,
06:24.240 --> 06:31.200
things like the sports ban, HB 151, things like the medical ban, HB 454, which would have
06:31.200 --> 06:37.200
de-transitioned to all transgender youth in the state medically. And I have personally posted
06:37.200 --> 06:43.520
TikToks of people that were testifying against these bills, and they went viral. And then people
06:43.520 --> 06:49.600
then asked me, how can I show up and how can I go and testify? And this digital activism collectively
06:49.600 --> 06:56.160
has led to what essentially was almost every single person coming out against the bill in
06:56.160 --> 07:02.400
public. And both of these bills failed. And so we do see the ability to organize online against
07:02.400 --> 07:08.400
bills like this. And that is one thing that I'm trying to make sure that we can do effectively.
07:09.280 --> 07:16.080
Moving forward, what do you hope changes when it comes to the way that platforms deal with
07:16.080 --> 07:22.320
these online threats and legislation against the trans community? You know, there are guardrails
07:22.320 --> 07:27.280
that have to be established against hate. And if you don't establish those guardrails against hate,
07:27.280 --> 07:33.440
you will make your platform, number one, uninviting to members of any minority community.
07:33.440 --> 07:38.880
And number two, you're going to kill the ability of your platform to reach advertisers and the
07:38.880 --> 07:43.520
ability of advertisers to reach people on your platform. Companies don't want to see their
07:43.520 --> 07:49.360
content placed alongside hate. And so I think that platforms have a responsibility, a social
07:49.360 --> 07:56.400
responsibility, too, to ensure that hate content is not left unmoderated on the platform. And this
07:56.400 --> 08:04.400
both goes for the ability of hate content to spur on anti-trans legislation, but also the ability of
08:04.400 --> 08:09.760
this hate content to spur on anti-LGBTQ violence. And I think that we've got so many examples of
08:09.760 --> 08:11.200
that having happened before.
08:11.200 --> 08:16.880
Erin Reid is a legislative researcher and trans rights activist. We'll have a link to that report
08:16.880 --> 08:22.880
from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, which is the educational arm of the LGBTQ plus civil
08:22.880 --> 08:28.960
rights organization on our website, marketplacetech.org. Jesus Alvarado produced this
08:28.960 --> 08:32.560
episode. I'm Kimberly Adams, and that's Marketplace Tech.
08:32.560 --> 08:37.280
This is APM.
