Scotland gender reforms: UK ministers may block reforms

The UK government may seek to block Scottish gender reforms making it easier for people to change gender. It comes after the Scottish Parliament voted to lower the age when people can apply to change their legal gender to 16, and remove the need for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria. But this has prompted a clash with the UK government who have concerns over safety for women and children. Nicola Sturgeon's Scottish government says it will fight attempts to stop it. On Thursday, members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) voted by 86 votes to 39 to approve the controversial self-identification system, which makes it easier for people to obtain a gender recognition certification (GRC).
The UK government could prevent the legislation becoming law by blocking Royal Assent - when the Bill gets formal agreement by the King and becomes an Act of the Scottish Parliament. It has also not ruled out mounting a legal challenge. UK Minister for Women and Equalities Kemi Badenoch said the Scottish government has not addressed the implications of the bill on the lives of women and girls. She said in a statement: "The UK government is now looking at provisions that can prompt reconsideration and allow MSPs to address these issues." Scottish Secretary Alister Jack warned: "We will look closely at that, and also the ramifications for the 2010 Equality Act and other UK-wide legislation, in the coming weeks - up to and including a Section 35 order stopping the Bill going for Royal Assent if necessary." Under UK law, it can apply to have Scottish laws struck down by arguing they would conflict with UK-wide equalities legislation. This power has not been used before.
But a spokesman for the Scottish government warned that any attempt by the UK "to undermine the democratic will of the Scottish Parliament will be vigorously contested".
Scotland's Social Justice Secretary Shona Robison, responding to Mr Jack, said: "It would be very disappointing if the UK government didn't respect Scottish democracy and the decision of the Scottish Parliament.
"This area of policy is entirely within devolved competence."
Previously, Ms Sturgeon said she would "never apologise for trying to spread equality, not reduce it, in our country".
The Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill's opponents, including nine SNP MSPs who voted against it, have fears over its potential impact on women and girls, in particular single-sex spaces, like toilets.
The Scottish government insists little will change and exceptions barring trans people from single-sex space in some circumstances in the Equality Act will stand.
People in Scotland have been able to change their legal gender from male to female or female to male since 2005. The Scottish government believes the existing process can be intrusive and distressing and put people off applying for a Gender Recognition Certificate. The new rules, which are expected to come into force some time next year, will mean applicants will now only need to have lived in their acquired gender for three months - or six months if they are aged 16 and 17 - rather than two years. There will be also be a three-month "reflection period" during which they can change their minds and it will be a criminal offence to make a false declaration or false application for a GRC, with anyone who does so potentially facing up to two years in prison. It will be possible to de-transition by going through the process again. Nine other European countries have already adopted self-declaration systems for legal gender recognition, including the Irish Republic, Denmark, Norway, Portugal and Switzerland. Also on Thursday, Spain passed a bill bringing it a step closer to allowing people to change their officially registered gender by filling in a form.

I really hope they do as they are correct that it’s in conflict with the Equality act which Scotland are trying to circumvent and ofc, no protections against sex pests pretending to be women.

Looking forward to seeing Sturgeon take yet another L.

Scotland is basically the Canada of the UK. a freezing cold irrelevant shithole whose natives have zero identity outside of hating on their southern neighbours. Their government is more interested in crying about how "oppressed" they are and engaging in pointless virtue signalling to make themselves look morally superior to the English than it is about actually improving the lives of its citizens (for example, they doubled down on Covid bullshit and kept mask and social distancing rules for far longer than we did, amusingly they ended up with many more Covid cases). It'll be hilarious if the Scots torpedo their own independence cause by martyring themselves in the name of tranny rights, in the process pissing off Westminster to the extent that they never give them a referendum again.

Just completely setting aside matters of (geo)politics for a moment:

and remove the need for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

Shit like this is so nefarious and helps nobody. It serves only to expand the market for 'gender-affirming' interventions, completely ignoring questions of whether they're medically relevant in the first place.

Save for edge cases like precocious puberty where some of these drugs may be needed (and a diagnosis required), I obviously don't think they are ever medically relevant, but at least with diagnosis requirements in place it forces the patient to go through some sort of intake process to evaluate for co-morbid mental illnesses.

How did Scotland become more woke than England? Can anybody give me the money trail?
Unlike America, the working class in the UK has been traditionally associated with far-left politics for quite some time. Add the additional influence of Soros-backed NGOs orchestrating political affairs and you have Scotland today.

The people generally aren't, but they reflexively vote for the SNP out of a combination of resentment against the English, a vague desire to be independent, and because the SNP aren't tories or labour. The way the electoral system in Scotland is set up also disproportionately favours the SNP and gives it a built-in majority in the scottish parliament.

The SNP itself was formed in the mid-30s, from a merger of a nationalist party (the Scottish Party) and the "National Party of Scotland" - which is one of those cute, euphemistic names used by marxists, in an attempt to appeal to nationalists without actually being nationalists. It's been infested with the same sort of double-thinking, academic twats for its entire history, but because it's got "nationalist" in its name, and because it campaigns for independence, the Scots vote for it.

It started as a way to bleed off Scottish Labour voters, now it's a way to suck up to the EU so that they'll let Scotland join up when they get their independence. Not that that'll ever happened, as the North Sea oil and gas fields will be completely dead in another decade and Scotland will be entirely reliant on handouts from Westminster again, at which point most of Holyrood's devolved powers will be rolled back. That's why even Starmer is telling them to do one in regards to another independence vote.

This is all about Scottish independence in my opinion. I can't see why they'd leave the sex offenders stuff in unless they wanted the UK parliament to block it. UK parliament blocks it and then the SNP complain about London interfering in Scottish democracy etc etc.

Hope UK parliament does nothing and the scots are left with a load of bearded paedos and rapists running around as 'real women'.

I wonder how many actual Scottish people support this. Rate me optimistic, but I'm hoping that this is a typical case of a small loud few getting their own way while the majority disagree. And so the SNP finally get a dose of reality come election time.

No idea who the alternative to SNP is though. Any kilt faggots in this thread?

You don't need money when spite will suffice. Same reason Canada is so intent on administering MAID on a national level, just because doing so pisses off the USA.

In other words they will cry about it.
This law affects all of the UK, not just Scotland. And it wasn't "the will of the people", it was a petition launched by Mermaids and Troon groups.

Denmark and Ireland have already had issues with self ID, and a Norwegian feminist is looking at jail time for saying men can't be women.

Scottish courts ruled that males can be women if they say so. It isn't biological fact over there.

It’s a small country that’s being used as a wedge. A large amount of money has been spent and a lot of dodgy people have been listened to. Malta also had this happen to them. The idea i think they’re going for is that it’s easier to subvert a small country than England or the EU. But once you’ve got a couple of these smaller countries in board you can start making noises about ‘look how progressive x country is let’s get the EU caught up.’ There’s a legal group I think are called TELI or similar who are pushing this a lot.
It sets up a huge clash with the English law. You can’t have a man being a man in his passport in England and being a woman in Scotland. It’s against the equality act (and oh do they want to change that act, they’ve tried multiple times to get sex replaced with gender.)
Sturgeon, the nasty little wretch that she is, has done this to force Westminster to step in and block it and then she’ll start whinjng for another independence referendum. That’s her goal. England HAVE to block it, they will block it and then sturgeon can look all aggrieved at the English and start calling for indyref 2.
She’s a disgrace. Allowing men who have been convicted of rape to say they’re women and go in womens jails. Utter fucking lunacy.
