I’m excited for this thread to really pick up. I’ve always been into true crime but the idea of harassing real family members is insane holy shit. Watching YouTube videos and reading some reddit threads doesn’t suddenly make you a forensics expert. I agree with you on that. Any male ran true crime channels I hate (so that chapter) are only mild cringe. Female ran channels eating, doing makeup and not having an outline or script make me rage way more.

Some of the women I've seen that make up the True Crime scene:
1. A fair chunk of serial killer (and domestic violence) victims are women, so a bunch of them got into the "fandom" of it by hearing about yet another case, looking up places - reddit and such - to see what people were saying about it, and falling into the True Crime sphere of influence.

2. A fair few women are really, really bored and instead of getting too much into some RPG/waifushit gacha game/World of Tanks autism like men, they turn to becoming amateur detectives, since women maybe moreso than men are better at gathering and finding out personal shit people have posted online. It's an enticing idea to think something you did helped solve a cold case, though I can't really recall a story related to that. Also falling into this tier are women who are ACAP and constantly need to remind people police are 100% useless and internet detectives are much better at solving cases and totally wouldn't have lost evidence or tampered with crime scenes.

3. Serial killer husbandofags who want to prove their bae was a tortured, sweet cinnamon roll who didn't deserve to be punished for his crimes ((( (I HOPE most in this tier are still edgy teenagers; I'm more forgiving of that since as we grow older we tend to forget how cringy we used to be, even if this is a more extreme case. Now, if they're adult women, then it's an issue).

4. Some just find the stories interesting. It's easy to distance yourself from the crimes being things that happened to people in the real world and take them as just stories. You have crime novels, a genre that's hugely popular, especially with women, and you have IRL stuff. You start to gravitate towards real life stories when you want a change of pace from the books and the adaptions. I won't say it's taboo, since that's ridiculous, but it's certainly interesting.

2 and 3 are really the shittiest people in the "fandom". 1 is useful for having actual info on cases and not making huge, vast conspiracy theories about what exactly happened. 4 is the normies, probably your mom or aunt who like a good British crime drama.

Last night I started to write something similar to what Trekkor did, but mostly I wanted to talk about #2 on his list because I think they're the majority type. I haven't seen any sociological explanation for this type of woman, but being into true crime myself, I've had a lot of experience with these type of so-called fans.

The best way I can explain it, is there is a type of woman who is attracted to true crime because they approach all crimes like they are a game of Clue. And they base the guilt or innocence on who they personally like, all murders are whodunits to them. They are absolutely obsessed about personal details that may or may not be relevant. Never mind that a good number of murders have a murderer who doesn't know the victim because it was a robbery but forget about those don't really interest them as much.

Some women realize they are doing this, and instead attempt to be clever and come up with stupid explanations like the murder wasn't really a murder or other contrarian answers.

To add to this - I speculated in another thread that there is some (completely normal) psychological mechanism whereby people are driven to learn about and fictionalise things that are 'threatening' to them. The opposite of women being interested in true crime/serial killers/rapists is men being interested in war and military stories/tragedies/battles. Note that the popular true crime stories are not 'a male gangbanger got shot by another male gangbanger' but rather involve women and children, and abuse, rape or murder of women and children, even though the former is far more common. A psychologist would understand it better than I do.
