It's not that easy to get a prison sentence in the United States. Some things that lead to automatic and/or lengthy prison sentences in other countries tend to get dismissed here if the defendant promises not to do it again and pay probation fees. You've got lots of mechanisms for that: probation before judgment, diversion, drug courts, veterans' courts, etc. If not dismissed, they're pleaded down to avoid the cost of incarceration. Drunk driving becomes reckless driving, a 2nd or even 3rd DUI becomes DUI 1st, etc. And prison showers are cleaned by prisoners, so they keep them pretty clean. The rape thing is mostly TV and homosexual fantasies. Sometimes both (e.g. Kurt Sutter).
