Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

the last of us two
would like a word with you
Low hanging fruit, the last of us 2 didn't suffer from a bad script, it suffered from a lack of actual game segments. I had flashbacks to MGS4 there was so few game segments in there. I didn't even have the jet engine sounds of my PS3 to drown out the boredom with white noise either.

Besides the game is getting a Director's Cut with supposedly new content. Which will invalidate the original release canonically.

Here's a question for you, when has game writing overall ever been good?

Personally I can't recall such a time, the quality seems to remain unchanged for decades, it seems to have plateaued. The medium needs writing the least out of anything else, a bad script can kill a movie or a book, but it's yet to kill a game.
But that's the thing. I would in fact argue it was better when there was less of it due to technical limitations and players could fill in the gaps.

Now every game writer huffs their own farts.

It's weird how something like Baldur's Gate's simple, meandering plot is phenomenal compared to today. Sneak me with your basic bitch ass lies, Koveras.

Games have spammed voice lines far longer than they have not.

Just look at Deckard Cain. Or hell, Tidus' laugh is now old enough to drive.

And the worst part is, you HAVE to buy these games, to keep the industry afloat through this challenging economy.
Bullshit. No one has to buy anything from these grifting scumbags. The industry has crashed before and eventually recovered with the last golden age we had over the 90's-2000's. Its just the cycle repeating itself again.

The recent video games involving the One Piece is slowly making me rethink the idea that these famous anime-based video games are just nothing but a cash grab. They look really fun to play, even if I have been slacking on watching some of the episodes.
Not every one can have an Ultimate Ninja Storm type series where they arguably do the story better than the manga or anime did.

The only thing that would make sense would be to put Joel back in so that the TV show can actually keep their one possibly decent actor around for more than one season.

That's not Sony's fault.

The reality is this, and it needs to be stared at in the face: most up and coming writers, especially video game writers, grew up on anime and bad fanfiction. They were educated in woke institutions.

As time marches on, more and more industry writers will be like this. They will never have to have undergone a period where they had to not just be an auteur writer with a stick up their ass, they had to know how to program, deal with technical limitations, and so on, which kept them somewhat grounded.

And you know what? Here I am bitching about the writers, but the consumers are little different.
I wish, but worse, they come from the american TV and movie industry. American screenplay took root its the standard now.
Massive budgets force developers and publishers to play it safe because the game bombing could sink them. Problem is playing it safe is no longer working either. These games need to sell several million copies at full price just to make their money back. Trying to make these games into movies is going to have limited success because if people wanted a cinematic experience they’ll just stream a movie.
I said this in the Sony Hate thread, but with the move to California, PlayStation became just like the major movie studios there. Everything has to be a "safe bet" big budget blockbuster because that's what they expect to make the most money off of. They only hire political bullshit artist writers and cram everything full of their politics instead of making a decent game or trying something new.

Playstation's big blockbuster, play it safe mentality is what made me realize I should just save money for a PC. God Of War is god awful, it just became a hyper on rails repetitive pattern of, solve puzzle, fight monster(s), talking scene.

This is broadly everything wrong with the industry, every game seems to be the same hyper safe, action adventure game. The best PS5 game is a PS3 remake. Spiderman was good too but it was just another FarCry style open world.

On a semi-related note, I liked Death Stranding.

I kind of liked Spider-Man but it had terrible writing, an unnecessary diversity hire that's going to be crammed into the sequel, the main love interest being made ugly, too much "girlbossing," bland gameplay, especially bland stealth segments, and enemies that take way too much damage from a superhero who's supposed to have to pull his punches to avoid turning them into pancakes.

I don't even want there to be an industry anymore. Burn it all to the ground. If no more video games were ever made from this point forward, we'd all still die with plenty of games still in our backlogs. Elect me as king and I will make all new video games illegal except the Like a Dragon games, which will be distributed for free on the taxpayer's dime to all Americans. Anyone trying to make a new game will be subject to deep background checks and interviews, and if their game turns out to suck, they will be drawn and quartered and called a fag in the town square.

It's mostly US/Canada/UK devs that are to blame.

The industry would be much better if the only people making games were the Japanese and eurojank companies.

It was better before it went all-in on playing Hollywood Jr.

the last of us 2 didn't suffer from a bad script
That's by far its worst quality, without question.

The worst part of The Last of Us 2 was a bunch of fat retards trying to gaslight me into believing Abby is what a natural woman looks like.

A new Duke Nukem´game would suffer the reverse problem of Duke Nukem Forever.

Forever played too straight while pretending it was self aware

A new Duke Nukem game wouldnt play him straight enough and make him a toxic masculinity joke instead of a love letter parody of 80's action heroes.

Forever sucked because it was made by a decent team with a very incompetent leader that kept changing engines constantly instead of sticking to their guns.

The new one would suck because it would be made by an incompetent team led by a complete woke manchild (Randy)

Duke lacked talent before, now he lacks cultural acceptance

I legit see an indie team of fans doing a better job at making a new Duke game than any triple AAA companies

Stop obessing about Duke's character and make an actual good game first.
Instead of a crappy Halo ripoff with scripted events every 5 seconds.

Duke Nukem is a product of its time. Forever could've innovated the FPS genre before Half Life 2 did with the Unreal Engine build. The tech is impressive even to this day. But, DNF lacks direction. It's basically set piece after set piece with no plot tying it together.

It's not DOOM where you ARE Doomguy. It's not Half Life where you are witnessing stuff unfold. It's not CoD where you are a cog in a war machine. It's Duke Nukem. The 80s are over. Maybe he could parody 90s shooters, but with Gearbox, that's unlikely.

Let Duke die.
