Jeffrey's plan seems to have been to try and be a less retarded Lowtax - in that he would just "fix" the site by not actively ruining it and having all the same people that couldn't wait to wash Lowtax's balls for free do the same for him. Unfortunately for him - those people all left ages ago - so no free content (no photoshops, no LPs, no flash vids, etc) and no real drive or desire to find something else to fill the gap.

The front page (the easiest thing to create content for - even if you do it yourself) has an article from June 2020 on it. There were a few "Photoshop Fridays" but the quality was clearly not there in any real capacity. This was on the first page of the most recent batch. Clearly a huge effort here.

The forums don't produce comedy anymore (if they ever did). The most recent dustup was goons whining that some goons (Australian Goons) were allowed to use the word 'cunt' on the forums but in other sub forums it was bannable and a bunch of 'women' were really upset about it being a 'slur' for them. The thread fell to shit near instantly and Jeff just showed up and put every single person who posted in the thread (no matter who posted or what they posted) a seven day time out because the 'cunt' discussion was taking place near fucking christmas and he couldn't be bothered (nor could anyone else).

They also re-shut down QCS and goons everywhere are whining in all of their separate and disparate discords everywhere.

Jeff really thought that people would view Lowtax's exit as the heralding of a new age and just (with no provocation) come flocking back to help rebuild Something Awful to it's former glory. He's learning now that people aren't going to be coming back from the greener pastures they've found.

You have to remember that part of the "lightning in the bottle" of Something Awful was there was, for a long time, no better alternatives.

The people that left found there are massively better alternatives. Kiwi Farms is a drastically better place to post than SA ever was - so even if you invented a time machine that restored SA to how it was in the 2000s, I still woudn't be bothered to leave here.

It's not just shitposters either - Photoshoppers/GOITS people/DPPH people all just went over to Reddit where they have a vastly larger audience. The prepetually offended cultural warriors fucked off to Twitter where the battle never ends. The actual Let's Players/Video Game players went over to Discord/Twitch/Youtube to another massive audience and in most cases revenue sharing.

Something Awful can't just "go back" to how things were and expect people to come back because SA's "how things were" still falls drastically short of every other website to ever exist for literally every single potiential user alive with the only exception being "Something Awful member who is extremely nostalgic for Something Awful".

I do wonder if people would come back just to be able to have a "forum" like experience instead of the reddit/twitter style. Like I would love something like Kiwifarms but with a bigger Games focus (since Null has stated that kind of chat isn't the point of the place).

It would require getting rid of of all the tranny jannies through and that is just not going to happen with SA.

I'm not gonna lie, I never really followed Lowtax all that much when he was alive, but for some reason anytime I scroll down the main page for the Farms and see his thread with the tag "Inactive" next to it, I can't help but start laughing. Just recently, I came to the realization that he sunk so low before offing himself that there was a non-zero chance that this man was paying tranny hookers thousands of dollars to penetrate him, and now I laugh even harder.

I don't disagree - but people looking for a "Game Forum" would likely look other places (NeoGAF, Reddit, Giantbomb, etc) before they went to SA.
