The place I was at with cats that moved between farms was only possible because there was a lot of foliage and tree cover. This makes it hard for predatory birds to spot them. Out in the plains area of colorado, anything that is out in the open for more than about 30 minutes has been spotted and evaluated as a meal by a bird of prey. That cat is not well camouflaged, less so in the tranch dust bowl. While you can get a healthy barn kitten, you are not going to find one in a feild of a farm with no barn kitten population in the middle of the plains, unless its inside a Raptor Pellet.

Cats are naturally based animals, and have a very keen sense of smell.

I think that's reasonable to a point. In general, I think posters here are too fast to assume animals are robots who always do things, when they're individuals.
