Dunno where else to put this, but about a week ago I decided to check out that new animated Christmas Carol film that released on Netflix a month ago. If anyone‘s curious, the title is “Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.”
So I watched it and honestly I found myself really enjoying it overall. It’s no groundbreaking masterpiece, but for what it is, I consider it a solid film/adaption of the book. It’s also based on the 70s musical film (which apparently the songwriter for came back to specifically work on this film before he passed. There’s a tribute to him at the end which I thought was nice.)
If you’re not a musical person, then this movie probably isn’t for you. I know many might not like this movie because it’s not the most book-accurate adaption, but coming from someone who loves the original book, I still loved this film regardless.
Honestly, my favorite aspect of the film is its visuals.
The character designs were hands down some of the best I’ve seen in a long while. My personal favorites were Jacob Marley and The Ghost of Christmas Past. Marley has the best design in the film imo. He shows up like a fucking badass and his whole ice/frost-theme really seals the deal for me. His firey coin-eyes were also a clever touch.
Marley was always my favorite character in the book and I’m really happy that he got some of the most badass scenes in the movie.
As for Past, I found her/their design to be very unique and creative. She’s basically a shapeshifter made of candle wax that can take the form of whoever she wants. She’s also one of the funniest characters in the film imo.
As for the main character himself, aka Scrooge, I thought he was great. I thought the music was also great and most of the songs have more or less grown on me.
I don’t want to go overboard so I’ll just leave it at this. Overall, I personally found this movie to be a solid 8.5/10. It’s certainly not for everyone and I can see why some people wouldn’t like it; it definitely lacks in a few places and imo would’ve benefitted from having a slightly longer runtime. As for me though, its earned it’s spot as one of my top 5 christmas films and I’ll definitely be watching it next time the holiday comes around.
(tbh though the funniest aspect of this movie for me is the absolutely batshit insane attention it’s gotten over on Tumblr. There’s a whole wave of fangirls on there completely simping over Scrooge’s design - it’s the Tumblr sexyman Onceler shit all over again. Between that and a few choice people on YouTube seething over this movie because “waahh it has black people in Victorian London wahhh”, I can’t decide which is funnier.)
