Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

I rated you thunk-provoking but it's also :optimistic: given how much R&M brings in the spergbux. For fuck's sake both him and Harmon are terrible drunks and Roiland has made numerous creepy remarks about Summer and they're still there! Reminder that [AS] fired the voice of Earlie from Squidbillies (decent show, reminded me of early Aqua Teen) for saying shit about Dolly Parton and BuyLargeMansions. Time will tell if R&M does stop because of this but CN had one other show that had its creator ousted over sex shit and still kept going.
I really hope R&M gets canned early, not because of Justin or anything, I am just so tired of looking at the art style. It tries to be so many things that it hurts to look at in motion.

I am ready for this tumor to be exorcized from Adult Swim so it can be cool again.
What about John k and Ralph bakshi?
Ralph Bakshi deserves to be remembered more than John K in my opinion. John K was talented but was also a prick to his staff and he groomed kids.

Ralph had the utmost respect for his staff and used all of their talents for his vision, man rubbed elbows with Frank Frazetta, that's like shaking Sinatra's hand.

John K is honestly a big contributor to that "poor taste" thing I went over, looking back on it. I never saw a single episode of Ren and Stimpy until it was aired a few years ago on Nick while I was flipping channels. It was honestly just not that great. The animation was nice, but it all felt disjointed, like clips from a demo reel cut together to make a 20 product. Many of the jokes were just not funny either.

Sorry, didn’t mean to disrespect them if it came off that way. I am moreso pointing out how these guys have been around for potentially upwards of 20-40 years and still dominate over essentially everybody. The fact that studios are crawling back to them because the newbies suck so bad really says something. They should probably be done by now or making small passion projects, not literally leading studio and all its animation like it is the 90s again. It should be concerning that all the talent is stored in people who have been going for decades and probably are close to retirement.

Thank god someone else said it. I wanted to list some and was scared if SpongeBob was seen as good or bad.

To me, the modern legendary animators are probably:
Groening - Hard to deny the influence of the Simpsons on not only animation but popular culture. Futurama should also be mentioned as a big series as well.

Bruce Timm & Paul Dini - The DCAU. Are you really going to question the leads of BTAS getting a spot?

Gennedy - He basically laid the foundation of CN with Dexter then became one of the most influential action show writers past Timm and Dini with Samurai Jack, The Clone Wars, Symbionic Titan, and Primal all being held up to high esteem.

McCracken - The Powerpuff Girls is within the big 3 CN IPs, so he deserves quite a bit of credit for the popularity of it alone, but then he made Foster’s and Wander, and was a large contributor to Gennedy’s work.

Klasky & Csupo - They get forgotten a lot, but the Rugrats was fucking huge for its time. That series managed to pull of a win against the Super Bowl for ratings in 2002 with All Grown Up, which is unbelievable. If any Nickelodeon talent past Hillenberg should get credit, it is certainly these two.

Lasseter - I mean, Pixar, am I right?

Brad Bird - Iron Giant, Incredibles, are we done?

Katzenberg - love him or hate him, the mother fucker deserves a spot for how much shit he was in charge of and managed to do. The asshole was all in on animation taking the Oscars and spearheaded many of the Disney Renaissance greats like Beauty & The Beast. He then went and established DreamWorks and masterpieces like Shrek and Prince of Egypt. Dude was an arrogant asshole, but he changed animation in a shit ton of ways and had many positive contributions.

Ward - Probably the only modern creator worth mentioning. Regardless of opinion on Adventure Time, it shook up the animation world throughout the 2010s in both positive and negative ways. He should get credit for the accomplishments AT brought.

Selick - Probably the only man to create mainstream stop-motion animation. Coraline and Nightmare Before Christmas are lesser stated animation wins, even if they are Goth Topic shit.

Judge - King of The Hill being the greatest slice of life anime from the west should automatically add him to the list, but he also pushed adult animation in the early years with Beavis and Butthead.

Matt Stone and Trey Parker - South Park is really the only true successor to the Simpsons let’s be honest. The amount of balls early South Park had and cultural domination is why they deserve to be remembered with the greats.

Honorable mentions:

George Lucas - Alright, hear me out. Lucas may not be everyone’s favorite, and you may not associate him with animation, but I think his role goes understated. The prequels were super impressive animation wise and George heavily invested in animation technologies. Lucas Arts really pushed quality tv animation as Clone Wars was always at threat of cancellation given how much money they dumped into getting fantastic CGI animation for a tv series. Hell, I remember hearing that it was his loaned out tech that helped make Rango look as amazing as it did in 2011. Lucas deserves a mention for how much he and his company pushed the tech at the very least.

Burton - Again, love or hate him, the foundation of stop-motion animation basically hinges on him and his style nowadays. He really helped shape the medium.

Please tell me if I missed anyone or where the list may be shit. I mainly just looked at 90s and above.
Tom Ruegger. Can’t have that kind of list without the guy who made Animaniacs and Tiny Toons.

Oh get off the cross we need the wood. This isn't the first time that's been a problem in animation history. In the 2000s every flash cartoon looked and sounded the same, in the 90s every dic cartoon looked and sounded the same, in the 80s every filmation cartoon looked and sounded the same in the 70s every Hannah barbera cartoon looked and sounded the same.

Time is just a never ending loop that always circles back around in on itself, just with different variables (in this case animation art styles ) everytime it does.
The problem is that the art is degenerating. At least cartoons two decades ago actually had straight lines and colouring with contrast. In ten years cartoons would all be just amorphous blobs.

"Like, zoinks! I'm driving around with an expired registration and no insurance! Then I'm be uncooperative when I get pulled over which will turn a warning into an arrest with a resisting charge!"
Ah, but you messed up. THIS Shaggy doesn’t say “Zoinks”, because that’s childish. Instead, “Zoinks” is the name of an illegal party drug or something.

Could we said then Ren and Stimpy cameo in the Simpsons episode "Brother from the same planet" did not aged well?

I just miss the greatest computer animated kids DVD movie Highway 35/Acceleracers. That shit was an absolute banger. Remember when people made children’s cartoons that didn’t think kids were all brain-rotted, attention-deficit drooling retards who were too dumb or sensitive to handle mature themes and subjects like death, destruction, loss, betrayal or self-doubt? Even though the CG is a little dated (it did come out in 02 and ~05, and had a low budget), this shit kicked ass. Had everything a growing boy needed. Fast and cool cars, science fiction, crazy dimensions, unique characters, a scary villain, a dangerous threat, fights, drama, comedic relief, a killer soundtrack, toys, and A FUCKIN’ CARD GAME. Total bullshit it ended on a painful cliffhanger. They could easily make something like an online comic or something if they’re too scared to invest money into a Season 2 or whatever, but Mattel will just keep ignoring it and teasing fans by inching out Acceleracers cars in obscure video games that they know autistic Hotwheels collectors will shell money out to get. *sigh* Where did the time go?

Since we are listing off great modern animators I feel like my nigga C.H Greenblatt deserves some love for getting hosed by both nick and CN. I think chowder would have done great if it wasn't dumped, maybe not like the next spongebob but up there. Harvey Beaks didn't suit me as much but the fact he wanted to make something more earnest and thoughtful was noble and is sorely needed in kids animation. The mixed medium stuff in chowder was really interesting too.

Absolutely agree. Chowder was a gem, and Greenblatt worked on the storyboards of and helped write some of the best SpongeBob episodes, especially Shanghaied, which is one of the greatest episode of all time. He also did storyboard work for the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.

I'm having difficulty not believing this is Stable Diffusion not trying to do its version of Handsome Squidward.
