He does now, sure. But those numbers are trending in the wrong direction. He’s still got a six figure book in him, maybe even two or three more yet. Let’s be generous. Plenty more trips to Ruth’s Criss Steakhouse can be had, for a little while anyhow.
But what signs can you see on the horizon that offer promise of a second wind for EVS?
1. There’s not likely to be a second Fandom Menace any time soon. No unwoke nerd franchise with a sizable fandom is left. Even if there were, crappy new adaptations have become the rule and not the exception. You can’t harvest clicks and superchats from viewers who don’t care/aren’t there.
2. How many people born after 1995 are in the habit of buying, reading, enjoying, or even just collecting floppy comics? Just the western comics pamphlet formula represents a pretty big, weird ask for about two generations now. Shouldn’t surprise you, really. Remember how awful the kids books were during the era of Ethan’s patron saint Dan diDio? The fields were salted and the new growth never grew! Many a reader of manga associates floppies with insultingly watered-down adaptations of kids shows. They view this stuff as quaint at best.
3. All attempts to bring CG to non-nerds or comics readers have failed so far. Granted all I’ve seen on that front seems to be Yellow Flash and SimpCast personalities, so maybe it’s one of those who/whom situations. If anyone wants to start inviting on lets players, mukbangers, or friendly country old people who make rustic how-to videos, maybe that’ll change. Who knows. But I doubt it. Dropping $50+ on a bagged and slabbed holofoil floppy is a comic dweeb’s game, and non-comic dweebs aren’t interested in this crap.
So EVS needs to deeply ingratiate himself to the following he’s got. Except he isn’t. And their numbers are dropping. And as for the ones he’s still got, all he can do is hope the economy treats them well in the coming years. He’s relying on them buying in hard on collectibles.
But hey… collectibles.
How well do collectibles hold their value when nobody is excited to invest in them anymore? And once they drop, who buys in on new ones?
I vaguely recall an EVS video prognosticating doom for Star Wars toy collectors based on the modern apathy towards the brand in the wake of the sequels. Oof.
It’s all so shortsighted and dismal it makes me actually pity his dependent family. But then again, look at him! What kind of dependable breadwinner allows himself to get that dangerously big and fat?
