Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

I'm gonna say it. DC's Scooby Apocalypse was a better adult take/deconstruction of scooby doo than Velma is.

OK, I have to admit, post-apocalyptic Scooby-Doo as a concept is fucking amazing. The execution is either equally legitimately amazing, or complete and utter dogshit. How do you think it lands on the scale?

ETA:
This time, the horrors are real in this apocalyptic near-future badland!
THEY LITERALLY USED THIS EXACT TAGLINE FOR ZOMBIE ISLAND
This time, the monsters are real!

>piggy-backs off of an established IP despite it....not really loving that IP or giving enough a shit about it to at least pretend to
>hated by literally everyone (NOT EVEN THE FUCKING WOKIES LIKE IT)

HBO Max: "Yes, this totally deserves a second chance, keep slaying, queen!"

We can't discount the possibility that the reason CE got cancelled while Velma keeps living is because Quintel is a straight white dude while Kaling is a female Pajeet, and as we all know, in the current entertainment landscape, DIVERSITY wins out over, you know, being actually good.
I guess our only hope is someone check if Kaling have some hidden skeletons in her closet despite then she isn't white.

Btw, this screenshot of Velma could look like a variant of the Happy Merchant meme. She does have a smile who reminds me of the Happy Merchant...

What was always funny about that tagline for Zombie Island is that it's not even the first time the monsters were real. You had 13 Ghosts and then the crossover movies that had real monsters. But for my generation who grew up basically only on reruns of the original, the Scrappy Doo show, and A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, we didn't really know that. So Zombie Island being this brand new Scooby Doo movie, where the monsters were real this time, was actually special. It seemed new and original cause 13 Ghosts sure as fuck never got reruns that I can remember in the 90's.

OK, reading through Scooby Apocalypse now, since @A Grey Cat piqued my curiosity. I've been imagining their 90s-2000s cartoon voices while reading it, and hearing 90s era Velma talk about the nanite apocalypse and 90s era Daphne yell "I BET HITLER THOUGHT THE SAME WAY" have catapulted my sides into orbit. Oh my god, thank you @A Grey Cat. Also, you're right. This is legitimately better than Mindy's Velma.

The only real reason why Velma is getting a second season is because of the name being highlighted on top of a popular and iconic IP like Scooby-Doo. If this had nothing to do with Scooby and the gang nor had anything to do with Velma, and instead they focused on the character like Shaggy and see what goes through his mind when he’s not just looked as a stoner/lazy character, this would be canned like it’s nothing.

All of this talk surrounding “diversity” by just brown-washing Velma while also having to add vulgar sex references on top of lazy, random jokes is just a distraction from the fact that they have to continue to use and destroy the already famous and well-known IP’s in the vault to justify why there’s no such thing as real and authentic storytelling anymore.

”Velma” is going to be used as a scapegoat to get more seasons while real and talented cartoonists with good stories to tell will be left wondering why this medium is creatively bankrupt.

You're quite welcome Vyse. I don't know about keith griffin but jm dematteis was one of THE definitive writers for spider man, he wrote the iconic Kraven's last hunt after all. Look it may be either dogshit or so bad it actually goes full circle into laugh out loud funny, but you gotta admit even Velma doesn't have a "so bad it's good." vibe going for it. especially since Mindy Kaline legit believes her show is a work of underrated overhated genius. Also I think a few things like Fred and Daphnie being a camera crew may be an intentional refferecne tozombie island along with that tagline.

Point is love or leave it THIS is at least a step in the right direction for making a mature deconstruction of scooby doo not....unga bunga shaggy, pajeet velma, slut shamed daphnie, roaches fucking, or jerkass white men bad Fred.

Honestly, I would love an adult Scooby Doo that is just the gang in the most fucked, horror-inspired situations possible. Just take notes from Scooby Apocalypse or especially the Blair Witch Project episode, which yes, exists and is fucking hilarious

Also, for as much as I and we likely shit on them, Family Guy and Robot Chicken arguably create decent templates for an adult Scooby Doo. You can tell Seth was a previous employee at Hannah-Barbara and both Seths holds at least some respect for their properties, going as far as to get the film cast for the roles.

Also Solid jj

Not shocked there's been so much talk about the show despite it mostly being hatewatch that its gotten lots of press. Doesn't need to be good just needs to make people mad enough to tweet these days.

If you make the life mistake of going to half of 4chan they've astroturfed it with loads of forced discussions about it.

OH MY GOD, I CAN'T THIS IS FUCKING GOLD
going too far into comic sperging vyse, and we have a thread for that.
Frankly I'm just glad you at least found it funny cause Velma can't even claim that, The only thing funny about it is that it's getting a second season despite being shredded like cole slaw, and the writers are seething over the bad reviews. Saying "you right wing trolls just don't get it!" as if they're 14 not in their 40s...as ms kaline is.
