This is a huge part of it. There's also the issue that people react viscerally when you attack their moral identity. People believe things, but there are also things people believe you necessarily believe as part and parcel of being a good person. Those things vary in time and place. Attack those beliefs, and people will get upset, because you're saying they're not really good people, and that the people they say are bad people are actually not bad people. It's like how criticizing the pope in 15th century Europe didn't get people nearly as upset as criticizing the institution of the papacy itself. It's also like how your average Muslim will react differently if you say, "Those ISIS boys really are a bunch of cunts," versus, "Things like ISIS are just a natural product of Islam; it's a fundamentally anti-human religion."

In modern America, we have a lot of deep beliefs that form our moral identity, mostly centered around some version of "all people are equal," and one of those now is that any two people who like having sex, regardless of gender, should have the exact same social privileges as man and a woman.
