The ~Aesthetic~ thread - General thread for aesthetic trends including but not limited to fashion, art, and home design.

Yo, you ever bring that cluttery crap into my car you're getting kicked to the ditch by the side of the road at a high speed and take your gross ass fake nails with you.

But, in fairness, I gotta say, that "fancy" chandelier thing next to the very cheap air freshener is funny af.

But also someone please tell me this wasn't the windshield or the backwindow because if it is then I really wish death upon that.

Whatever happened to cottagecore? I feel like after relentless criticsms on tiktok for it being uh white supremacy it kind of died off and it's now cringy.
So wouldn't everything European be Eurocentric and thus problematic? Yes. And wouldn't everything non-European be problematic because it's cultural appropriation? Also yes. It's a never-ending cycle that starts with a Pinterest board and ends in internet race war.

I think it might be, actually.
Here's more cars:

I would love to see an entire house decorated in the "Space Age" aesthetic of the 1950's and early-1960's.

Unfortunately, this aesthetic is not common, anymore.

I like how this is what inspired the MIB HQ in the original film.
(Also, in rewatching this scene I just realized J had a VIP membership at Gold's, lol)

Not sure if this has a name, but I watch a lot of organizing videos and the desks have gone from minimalist, sterile white to this dreamy Asian girl aesthetics. Off-white rather than white and soft pastel colors. There are still Apple products, but often there's also cute stuff from Aliexpress.

I wonder how much of this is influenced by Korean design vs "kawaii" stuff.
I think it's fun and interesting to live in a time where westerners have gone from weebs to weebs AND Koreaboos and now we have this neat mix.

I hold a special hatred in my heart for whatever this ugly shit is.

Not only is it hideously boring, it's also detrimental to child development; kids need brightly coloured environments for eyesight. Recently, I was trying find a rainbow arch wall sticker and so many of them were just shades of beige and grey to suit this trend. I've also seen some tiktok mums proudly display their greyscale playrooms, because God forbid there be any hint of colour in their pristine modern hellscape.

I'm torn... Came here expecting Windows 95 and marble statues, to find out it's actually a thread about the most vapid whores to ever exist. I mean it is funny to some degree, but it's also enraging knowing people this fucking useless are allowed to exist.

Fuck it, I'll watch this one.

This thread seems pretty chill already, just post what you want to see :)

Personally, I want to know what kind of aesthetics kiwis are into. I'll start:

Might be cringe to some, but I admit I like Dark Academia. I don't have a board of images or anything like that, I just like occasionally looking at pictures of this aesthetic when I need clothing ideas or outfit inspiration.

I like sepia and white but a lot of ladies really overdo it. Make some of your knickknacks pastels at least!
here's an aesthetic song for the heck of it.

Better Homes and Gardens Aesthetic.
For a classic example of manufactured aesthetic to consoom, there is BH&G.
I cherry picked some images from their Paint Colors section. I knew somebody who had a house like it was out of BH&G and she used deep red as an accent wall in her basement that I could never decide if I liked or not, sometimes I flip through the magazine to laugh at their overpriced ad products and unlivable rooms. Once in a while they have a good recipe or a decor tip.

BH&G is as out of touch with reality as ever. Sorry, I don't think black is the color that's going to tie a room together, it's gonna weigh the room and your spirits down plus generally make the space feel smaller. The other are pretty drab looking, not Satan but drab.
These rooms look so monochrome it's making me wonder if they're trying to appeal to single men.

Color of the year from Pantone is...magenta? This is a bit of a strong color for me. I'd keep magenta to the knickknacks and pillows.

Benjamin Moore's color of the year (whoever that is). I think you could guess my criticism.

Here's an image I like for good measure (I just don't see the point in putting a plant in front of a mirror like that esp. if it will grow more):

The more wellness-focused trend was "that girl". A trend of women doing yoga laundry, juices and lists every morning. Basically pretending to be on top of your game, hyper-productive but still making time for healthy food and exercise. Living your life like actresses pretend to live theirs in interviews, hyper-busy but often at home, driven but about the most pointless shit, and obsessed about their bodies. I do think they are not wrong that a lot of that was repackaged eating disorder and diets. "That girls" bodychecks obsessively and typically lives of soy matcha latte, small portions of porridge, smoothies and lemon water.
Crossposting here as an excuse to show some examples of "that girl".

Is it really? My little relatives all have a variety of stuff in their house, but I always thought the monotone stuff was to prevent overstimulation or something.

Maybe it reflects the light and helps the plant grow more?

I don't understand aesthetics, is it literally just one off outfits an staging your bedroom to look good in TikToks? Without even pretending to have any deeper interest in the thing you're imitating? Am I old?
Yes, we're old, but also part of it is that for the younger generation, staging and presentation in TikToks and social media is part of their monoculture. Even their "subcultures" contain aspects of self-presentation. The kids that don't do this aren't the ones we see online making this content.

This thread seems pretty chill already, just post what you want to see :)

I don't think it's cringe, especially for the reason you just mentioned; you're getting something practical out out it.
I struggle with dressing myself as an adult because I kind of missed out on the phase where you're supposed to be able to experiment with that stuff. GenZ kind of has an advantage here, because even those who can't afford clothing they actually like will still be able to curate their aesthetic sensibilities and figure out what they like and don't like from what they see online.
A teenager without a lot of money may not be able to build a whole wardrobe from scratch, but guides like this can help a lot:
lb1oha6m8bu31.png
When they get the opportunity to spend money on things they want, they will be more confident in those decisions.
Similarly, seeing things like clothing and makeup on other people like yourself can help you explore those looks without the financial investment.

Black and brown people have botched for literally years and years about being referred to by food items. Mocha, chocolate, etc. Apparently it's racist to use analogies to describe skin tone, except that they also bitch about being referred to as brown or black.

Their number one compliant was that no one calls white people food. Now that people are calling white people vanilla they are screaming because black people can't be vanilla. :story:

I find sjws to be both infuriating and lulzy. Nothing is ever good enough for them. The only way to win with them is by not playing.

This thread is awesome.

I just checked Refinery29 and the changed the title of that article on their front page to get even more rage clicks:

The only winning move is indeed not to play, and to just laugh at them instead.

And look what I just found in the related threads:

What did I say about the Asian girls? What did I fucking say?

This column is seriously called Team Unbothered? Ow, my sides. Are they seriously unaware of how lulzy that name with this column is? Yes, yes they are. This kind of shit is why I hang out here.

It's retarded too. The clean girl is something everyone can do, even the dark or hyperpigmented people. The whole idea is not to ~promote euro centric beauty ideals~ - it's about feeling comfortable in your skin. To look better than yourself, but not so much you're unrecognizable. It's a very positive look, the kind that should be what body positivity should be about.

But because there aren't legions of blacks on TikTok wearing this look, the rest of the black people in TikTok can't take part in it. Because the way to get more representation in anything is by bitching about no representation on the internet.

I'm sure if someone pointed out that they could start the black representation on TikTok that they'd claim no one would pay attention to them, because racism. Just because you don't go viral doesn't mean people won't see you. I've been surprised at what tweets of mine got the most views and responses and from whom sometimes.

"Unbothered" seems to be entirely racebait:

But what's fun is their crossovers with the thread topic:

Gee guys, maybe you're just buttmad because your aesthetic choices are ugly as sin and you have the audacity to claim you speak for all "women of color".
Just a thought.

I feel similarly about a lot of other arguments as well. Whenever someone says "I can't do [X] because I'm in group [Y]" it just seems like they aren't willing to fight for what they want to do, or they maybe just don't want to do it at all and are using "I can't" as an excuse.
It's like pants. Women had to fight for years to wear pants. Then when cross-dressers come along they go "Well why can't I just wear a dress?"
You can, you just won't be accepted right away, just like when people first saw women wearing pants.
And also

Of course it is.

The only people who get a pass from me on "I can't" are legitimately disabled people. But a lot of them tend to focus on what they can do and if they say they can't it's more a statement of fact, less whining, which is how I interpret "I can't" most of the time. Because you're right, it is an excuse a lot of times.

I respect people who say "I don't wanna" because that's a level of self-awareness and honesty you don't see often. I might still mock them or think they are retarded though.

I'll admit it, I unironically love the southern/Midwestern gothic look.
Molding old farm houses that were once charming.
Mom and pop shops with kitschy store fronts.
Vast open expanses of nothingness.
Decaying small towns draped in an air of dread.
Random religious signs that are weird and creepy for no reason.

And I love all of it.

You would love my town then. Not going to dox it, but it has all that. Plus we're only an hour away from the big city.

My town has neighborhood filled with large Victorian houses. There's one in particular that I've always said I'd sell my soul to live in. I would love to show it off, but it wouldn't be a good idea with the rep this site has.

Someone in a town within driving distance put up a religious message sign that read:
Take a walk with "God"

I'm still kicking myself for not taking a picture. Sometimes I really love it here.
