No, a separate gay/tranny wing or prison used to be how it was handled but activists outside thought those were bigoted. Their main arguments being that transwomen are women and gays aren't different from straights. They should be treated like others and protected while included with others rather than pushed to the side. What I heard was that gays and trannies themselves had little issue with their separation as those prisons were much safer and they had easy time finding "dates".
Ahh, yes, ball python guys. Back during my BBS days I encountered three of these in the wild. They always wore dusters, usually dressed in all black, wore either a fedora or a cowboy hat (it depended on how much they liked Rob Zombie) and wore a lot of silver rings.
