That 90’s Show - Netflix sequel series to That 70’s Show

Just finished it. It was okay and inoffensive and definitely better in the second half. Like season 4 level. The show really only focuses on 3 of the new characters.
A lot of people are saying the kids feels like zoomers playing millenials unlike the original series but that's being said by people that weren't from the 90s

Given the current state of sequels/reboots/reimaginings/ect, I’ll take “okay and inoffensive” as a win.

I'm about 3 episodes in, and I don't hate it. There are a few cringe moments, and much like That 70's Show I've had to stop and think back like, "was that how it was?" and I've decided that sure, close enough.

I've watched a couple episodes. First thing I notice is naive, awkward but strong white girl, followed by the "I want to be as cool as you!" Black girl, then two stupid white guys, gay Asian, and some other ambiguous race girl.

In the 90s those demographics didn't exist and even if they did those people would never be in the same friend group. They all act like entitled zoomers and everyone wasn't so soft and fragile at the time. And why are all the guys wearing lipstick all the time and not once gets called a gay faggot? In the 90s even your teachers would call you gay for shit like that.

The old cast looks the same as before which is kinda weird but it may be just cause I grew up with the old show.

The kids aren't funny at all and all their lines feel forced.
The old cast is the same as ever so I'd say like 50% watchable

Perhaps the showrunners' biggest mistake was making it a Netflix production. I guarantee you there will be a tranny friend in season 2.

I wish a show just had the balls to show casual racism now, kind of like how Mad Men did. Maybe not glamourize it, but this reimagined nostalgia where everybody is okay with everybody is awful. Even the latest Tarantino movies set in the 60s didn't include the word 'nigger,' which is present in all of his other films.

the previous show didnt really have much racism. maybe a few sterotypes here and there and Red using it against FEZ
it did have some sexism and minor homophobia, but not nearly to the degree people in a small town in the 70s did.
Red had some sexist views, but he was actualy less sexist than bob was, oddly.
Bob the more hippy type who joined the national guard to avoid Vietnam is the one whos actually more sexist.

I suppose it's better than the alternative. You know, those movies where they retcon an era to look way more bigoted than it really was. Usually happens in Oscar-bait.

The inevitability of the mainstream adopting 2000s nostalgia puts fear in my heart. Better call saul kind of tested the waters for this in a subtle way.
Besides the Blockbuster scene, I don't think Better Call Saul leaned on that as much. That universe was always pretty ambiguous when it came to dating. If you notice it, they never celebrate any holidays and the weather looks the same year-round, etc. It is intentional.

But if you've met zoomers, they are into 2000s fashion for some reason. Walk into a college campus and you'll see whaletails and ugly denim miniskirts/flared jeans again.

It's mostly ambiguous but all the vehicles are at the newest mid 2000s models and the most advanced phone is a flip phone. Modern media usually feels the need to include social media which never happens in saul. There's several other little things. Yes, they try to keep it somewhat ambiguous to be timeless but based on when breaking bad took place they could only hide the timeline so much.

Breaking Bad came out and took place in 2008, so Better Call Saul was simply forced to take place in the early 2000s. I don't think they were going out of their way to make a nostalgia piece, I'm sure they would have just been easily made it take place in the 2010s if it was an original concept. It's just that their hands were tied by virtue of it being a prequel.

Thought Donna was looking rough, but I guess that's what happens when one fails at paying Scientology tithes. Kitty... I guess the logic is she dyes her hair now because she doesn't look like she aged a day. But, looking at the kids gives me the Disney Teen sitcom vibe and might be the source of their charisma vacuum. I suppose there is some merit to the idea that the new cast (like the Star Wars sequels) just isn't as interesting as the old cast regardless of how well they're written.

That's what happens when the people you hire are just there to check boxes and have zero chemistry with each other.

Leia's character is written too much like a guy. I get there were trying to go for the whole Eric 2.0 without re-hashing the same territory, but there's an episode where she goes to the mall trying to find a guy to kiss and all the guys run away from her. Then jay kelso who had been flirting with her any chance he got beforehand, turns down her attempts for a kiss because he wants their first kiss to be special. Convoluted writing up the wall. No passion, relying on what came before it without understanding it, no real care for the '90s', so just like Wensday it will probably be renewed. But hey at least the OG cast and creators probably got a fat check.

I watched the episode where the Asian kid wants to come out to Kitty. I never watched the whole original series so I don't know if they had this pacing, but it feels weird that he wants to come out (in the 90s, no less). I know it's a comedy, it would probably be too dramatic if he kept it a secret or something, but it would've been better if it was a plot story saved for a later season or have Kitty struggle with it (maybe not homophobic, just trying to understand it) instead or just “that's ok I love you.” The show doesn't feel very 90s with the diverse cast and everybody being cool with homosexuality.

Twitter would have them canceled in an instant if they did.

Red would be the one to be homophobic anyway.

I liked that scene with Red and the computer late at night.

Raquel Welch IS good looking.
