Personally, my theory is that 90s kids in particular don't actually miss the decade for its "simplicity" as much as they miss it because they miss being children, tbh.I kinda remember the 90s, and yet, I don't. So I never got that whole "I wish we could go back to the 90s/80s/whatever, everything was simpler back then!" I kinda get the feeling that they also want to remember the good things, and forget about the bad (though when some people start sperging about the bad things as if they were good themselves, it kinda renders my point moot).
A lot of 90s kids are still getting adjusted to adulthood or are just becoming adults, and they're scared of rapid massive change and growing responsibility. So it makes sense they're suddenly nostalgic for a time when the bulk of their responsibility consisted of "do your homework, be in bed by 8, etc" and life was devoid of any real stresses for the most part. (This is also possibly related to why a lot of "adult babies" seem to be in that 90s-kid age range but that's another horrifying topic altogether)
