7 years or so after GG I'm still surprised how the people with the most power in gaming are non-gamers who know next to nothing about games.

I don't know of any other form of entertainment or art that has reduced itself to this, like image a movie critic that not only never watched a Kubrick movie but doesn't even know who he is, whose only experience with movies is seeing part of some michael bay and marvel movies, that's their entire experience with cinema.

And yet this person is at the top of the film industry, their opinion is the gold standard and anyone who call them out on their bullshit gets shut down.

That's gaming now.

The true autists and crazies though... Patience has a limit and it's broken shit, being accused of stealing from them, getting hostile when you tell them they can't panhandle in front of the store, that they know you're stealing their identity when you ID them with the credit card, it goes on.

I've never really had a problem with true autists at my store, I just find it funny when they come to the counter and blurt "WHAT CAN I BUY WITH $X.XX?" When the cheapest item in store is a $4 pot of glue or paint. Everything else starts at least $40 for something nice. Even the ones without tard wranglers seem to understand no compared to schizos.

Never had a problem with the church crowd outside of the pearl clutching at some suggestive waifu figures. Including tiny <1/4 inch nudists for train dioramas. To the point we had to keep thoes small figures behind the counter just to shut them up.

@Phalanges Mycologist

>We don't live in a Capitalist society with live in a Corporate one
(Can't quote)

Capitalism is very good until it isn't, its life cycle ends with oligopoly. Free markets have a tendency to kill themselves off and stop being free eventually. So you have a situation where private companies leverage for more state intervention because its in their own best interest of they are big enough to consolidate their position in the market while screwing everyone else out. Competition implies someone eventually wins and monopoly is the ultimate prize

Of course even the US has anti-monopoly laws but they'll keep gathering dust because the political class makes its money with lobbys and insider trading with their investments in these megacorpos that don't care about destroying a culture and society as long as they can show growth to stockholders. They'll be doing their darnest to lower wages, skirt laws, hire less people and reduce the quality of the product to the minimum while increasing its price. Tactics that would kill a small company will not do a dent to a corporation that owns the market and no one has any alternative than to deal with it. It leads to stagnation and depression.

Despite what my handle might suggest I don't think I've ever pondered the existence of N scale tiddy until today. But when I am old and gray and my quiet twilight years are spent painting miniatures while a comfy gentleman putters around with tracks in the basement, you bet your ass I'm going to have me a nekkid beach scene now.

Gaming in general, but video gaming in particular. I've been a video gamer since around 1986, and I've seen what it can be go through many cycles, my biggest gripe with it now is really fourfold.

1: Politics shoved everywhere. This can be an amazing part of a story arc, or using the medium as a parable. Today, it's not used as a storytelling method mostly, it's used as a cheap gotcha, or worse, the entire game will revolve around one pertinent point to the story with no real exploration of any opposing perspective or viewpoint. Now, this can be fine if the world is built like so many, as a fight of good vs evil, but most recent games that have political connotations, whether overt or subtle, don't have enough depth for the message to come off as anything more than annoying preachiness. Now you could bitch up a storm about this on your favorite place to, or you could simply not play the game. Since I've been around games so long, I tend to just take the latter option, because unless I'm looking to troll the easily offended on internet spaces explicitly designed to take offense to reactionary or opposite opinions, I'd rather just go play a more fun game. And I can still do that, thankfully.

2: Corporatism. Literally anything creative will get sucked into the maw of this. I know many here won't remember the day of DOS and early consoles, but there was so much creativity in what you could do with really limited hardware and software. Hell, even when the original NES came out, there were plenty of weird and fun titles put out that were just there to have fun with. This continued apace until more or less recently, when video games became more of a lifestyle commodity than just a fun hobby or pastime. This can be blamed on many factors, but the biggest one imo was the big corps realizing what an insane cash cow gaming could be and then, in typical corpo fashion, having the HR departments hound all the fun out of it, while simultaneously trying to gobble every minutely profitable IP up with promises of absurd payouts. This works well for a very few, just ask Notch, but it stifles creativity overall. And the stuff that the corp teams themselves put out are almost* universally soulless cash grabs with great graphics and not much else.

*Japanese and Eastern Euro studios tend to be somewhat immune to this sort of thing, but I've noticed even they are being slowly forced by the hand of finances to change their products.

3: Gamer "culture". This ties in with 2, but used to be quite bit different. I'm not really going to get into what it was like pre internet, because it was magazines, BBS's if you had a modem, local people you knew into it, and the local software store, if you had one. The early internet was a total goldmine for this hobby, because you could finally connect easier and gush or bitch about it or trade patches, the games themselves *cough* Doom *cough* or whatever else. And most people were at least somewhat pleasant to talk with, at least until fandoms took root. This all changed when gamer/nerd culture got mainstreamed by the corps in 2, leading to a huge slew of people and entitled kids invading what used to be a very autistic, but usually somewhat welcoming disjointed community. All that crumbled in short order under a wave of bullshit, drama, trolling, tribalism and acrimony.

4: Social media. This barely needs to be talked about. Once everyone realized they could share their opinions with literally everyone, the niche stuff died off, or went to Reddit or Discord to ossify, be over moderated, or simply desiccate.

It's not all bad though. There's still tons of games out there, many old, some new you can have fun with if you truly enjoy gaming. It does help immensely to game with a PC though. You don't even need a really powerful one.

They're not cosplaying; they're finding new simps to bankroll their OF pages.
It's maddening. I've seen teenagers do more than these people. I'm talking sewing, learning how to cut and shape foam, not to mention painting, creating stellar cosplays on a minimal budget. Just ask me how many construction sites I raided at night for insulation foamboard they were throwing out for my monstrosity when I was that age lol. Point is they've taken a art form that pushes your enginuity to the limit and corpritized it, patented it, packaged it, and slapped it on a lunchbox.

General Anime Fandom. Don't think I need to go deep here, others in the thread have covered it better. When I started it was all fansubs and VHS tape trading; when I quit going to conventions, it was a dumpster fire of English-VA centric BS.

The mainstreaming of anime and the proliferation of shit localizers in recent years is causing a bit of resurgence in the fansub community, but most of the time the releases are all just Crunchroll stream rip torrents on nyaa.
That's something I miss about voice acting in general. Back when it was a bunch of people that were transitioning between stage and screen, you had a more diverse pool of voices. Sure the voice direction sucked most of the time, but it was at least memorable. Sometimes you got lucky too and had something like Slayers where the dub cast sounded a lot like the Japanese cast.

The worshipping of regular dub actors spawned a bunch of skinwalkers who wanted to emulate Japanese voices as close as possible, aka the grating little girl voice thots always use. Nobody brings their own unique take to the table anymore. It's to the point where you can close your eyes with any dub and have no idea who the hell is talking.

I legit want to paint naked minis for a train set and i don't even like trains. something about this is just so wholesome and endearing in a weird way.

Yep. I have the unfortunate trifecta of interests that have been overrun by troons. Those being art, writing, and old technology. The tech one is the one I’m the most embarrassed to actually tell people irl, because somehow it went from a total nothing hobby to troon/scalper central. How is old technology such a lightning rod for trannies?
I think the old tech/troon pipeline is due to a combination of nerdism/autism. The autists tend to focus on singular and specific things, and the nerds of a certain age grew up with older technology as part of their childhood. Since trannys are now the Hot New Thing™️ and top of the oppression hierarchy, the autustic nerds have found a loophole for clout and shielding from bullying, so all of a sudden, that nerd that was picked on in grade school for endlessly sperging about Pokemon Red and Blue or Sonic The Hedgehog is now a True And Honest Woman™️.... who still spergs about Pokemon Red and Blue or Sonic The Hedgehog. It's such an epidemic in that scene that even the based nerds have just learned to roll there eyes and deal with it.

Forums! They fucking ruined forums. I've been going on forums since my first 2400 baud modem. I have to go on niche forums. And don't get me wrong, I fucking love these places, but sometimes I want millions of people to read what I write rather than a smaller group of people who all agree with me. Conversation flows easier from dissent, when you agree there's not always anything to add.

But you can't disagree. Weaponized reporting, shills and troon mods enforce a false consensus.

Blame Instagram.
Exactly what it is. Before you had pictures, sure, maybe they'd be shared around on fourm sites, or if you were really lucky, the news would get a pic of you. But neither were normie friendly. Now with these coomer friendly algorithms, the titty cosplayers get put on full display, and everyone forgets that they are a small part of Cosplay.

I much prefer it when most of these hobies were seen as cringe and for fat virgin weirdos and metalheads who don't shower, normies left you the fuck alone and whores stayed away. There is no escapism when the things you are trying to escape from follow you there!

Oh make no mistake those misfits still make up a big chunk of the community and always will. The problem is unless you go above and beyond, you're drowned out. It's taken me 6 years with a absolutely titanic cosplay just to gain a foothold at my local con in that people recognize me. Even then, I don't play the social media game, I like being that Easter egg that you have to find by just being there. That's how it used to be really, you didn't monetize it, and if you did, you fucking earned it

Male spaces, all kinds. This started a long time ago and I blame the precursor trannies for it, the FtMtF, or angry middle class women with a chip on their shoulder as they were called. With the law on their side they proudly burst into these male Area 51s and... found it to be incredibly boring but they hung around looking sullen for a while just so they could chalk it up as that big win for women.
Now the trannies are doing the same with female spaces. Exact same thing. Except they won't leave the locker rooms and bathrooms alone.

To me it seems female American voices in vidya and animu always sound like those of middle-aged women, no matter the character age.

(then again I haven't heard much of such dubs)

They're both byproducts of feminism in my opinion, which is why I don't feel bad when TERF spaces are co-opted by troons. It's basically like watching two retards battle on Jerry Springer.

I agree about how frustrating it is not having male spaces though. Maybe I'm biased, but I feel like aside from smoking rooms from the 1900s or stereotypical 80s board rooms, men aren't that unaccepting of women being a part of their hobbies. They tend to get a good welcome ribbing like the guys do and they're adopted in once they prove themselves. I think the women that complain about it have this power fantasy that they should be accepted and idolized without any merit and once they're in they wanna start changing shit. It's what made Anita Sarkeesian so infuriating despite how fleeting her influence was in retrospect. It's the sense of entitlement from narcissists clinging to the title of minority.

It was way more mundane than that in my experience. They got into male spaces, many that were not actually exclusive to males just more poignant to male interests, and it was done to prove a point and show that there is no hiding from women(wtf???). Just like troons kicking the door down to a knitting circle so they can menace the unsuspecting members and prove their point.

Activism is what is destroy hobbies.

If you find a still functional forum that hasn't been ruined by Photobucket fucking over the entire internet by putting everything behind a paywall, or killed by everyone migrating to Facebook and pReddit, consider yourself lucky. They're usually ran by no-nonsense boomer types or the hobby is obscure enough that the general population and troons aren't interested enough to ruin everything about it.
