Ah yes, suffering reduction. Allow me to soapbox for a moment.

While the vegan community has no shortage of crazies, there exist crazies so crazy they make even the average vegan say “you’re fucking crazy.” These are the people who believe in reducing suffering at all costs.

They legitimately believe that humans should do everything within their power to stop all suffering everywhere in the world. Their most (in)famous stance is the idea that all carnivores should be killed because they need to kill to survive, which is ironic and incredibly stupid, but isn’t even close to being the weirdest thing they believe. For example, the OP of that reddit post mentioned that only 1 in 1000 turtle eggs ever grow up into a healthy turtle. Do you want to see the solution a commenter came up with?

That’s right, gene editing! Is nature being mean? Just play god and bend it to your will! Ignore the environmental collapse that would bring. Or better yet, don’t, you can’t suffer if you’re dead, after all!

If you want to read some more suffering reduction nonsense, I can’t recommend this site enough (Archive). Have a taste of the crazy:

You heard it, don’t try to reduce your waste, that would kill the bugs!
It's amazing how narcissistic these people can be about things outside of their control, but I guess that's the point. It's either play God or kill everything if I can't get what I want.

it's not a specifically american problem, it exists in most western and westernized countries. anglosphere, western europe, korea and japan - it hasn't reached the exact same degree everywhere, but it's there, and in most of these places it keeps getting worse as the years go by
Dating is needlessly complicated these days. You want to know why there are so many incels and men deep in their 30s who've never touched a woman? Because they keep getting conflicting advice about what the fuck they need to do to attract a mate. Boys and girls are told from a very young age to hate and distrust each other lest the other one rape or kill them eventually.

There's a rise in pornography and its glorification. Men from a young age become addicts to smut and women glamourize being whores. Then women sell themselves high (see onlyfans whores, or those “baddies”). That 4chan post has a point, but even if you lead a healthy life good luck dating during your 30s. As a man you'll only find single moms and welfare queens.

I know this is the Reddit thread, but Jesus fucking Christ the insanity on that website is making me go crosseyed. This guy is so fucking whacked out of his gourd that he's constantly looking at every single action he does and trying to make sure that he causes no harm to any other living being, even fucking plankton. Don't drive in the rain because you might squish a worm with your car, don't walk on the grass because you could step on an insect (I note he doesn't question the sidewalks that have to be placed there instead), and go work for Soros because he'll triply match your charity donations (no joke, he actually recommends working for one of the biggest pieces of shit on the planet).

Look, I'm totally against unnecessary animal cruelty, but nature is fucking harsh enough on its own. Do you think a lion gives a shit about the suffering of the gazelle it's eating? Does a whale concern itself with the millions of krill it swallows? Fucking of course not, idiot. This retard seemingly has this naive view of nature being perfectly harmonious, when anyone who's ever watched a nature documentary can say "haha what the fuck are you smoking?"

Mankind should be responsible stewards of creation, but the only way you could possibly eliminate suffering long-term would be to sterilize the planet of all life. Perusing this guy's site, it wouldn't surprise me if that were his true desire, and that's fucking creepy.

Makes me wonder how s/he would handle passing feces or eating breakfast.

I have some tranny janny autism to share: jannies are now restricting r/DeclineIntoCensorship from posting about anything that comes from another subreddit at all, no censored screenshots, no quotes nothing. I am certain that this comes from a very fair and balanced position of stopping dirty reddit fascists from brigading innocent subs and definitely not jannies like Bardfinn getting his way because he was off his meds again. Also the mods flagged every post posted on the sub for spam, showing once again how petty reddit mods/staff really are.

In all seriousness this really sucks, DeclineIntoCensorship used to have some pretty fun posts of reddit autism and I'm pretty sure this was the last one that wasn't neutered or banned until now. Oh well at least now my reddit usage will be cut to near zero so I have that to be thankful for I guess. (also I wonder how much kool-aid was given to the mod to say that this is for the safety of users)

edit: posted wrong link

I'm surprised r/DeclineIntoCensorship went this long without Reddit powermods/admins messing around with it.

I think the big reason is because r/WatchRedditDie was the scapegoat for a really long time, they were always the first to get hit with restrictions that only applied to them, until the owners gave up and archived the sub before it got banned or became something unrecognizable. During the time WatchRedditDie was around DeclineIntoCensorship didn't really get hit with too many restrictions until it was just them left.

I was just reading a thread on r/datingadvice where a women came to the conclusion she was attracted to violent men and every other women was encouraging her to keep on dating her violent abuser to "own the chuds."

It's kind of astonishing just how broken the average redditor is.
All i can say to that is "You go, girl!" :story:

I'm not sure how to respond to this without name calling.

Yes only 1 in 1000 seaturtles survive, that's why they lay hundreds of eggs. It's called evolution, ever heard of it?

Also, invalidating an argument because it uses muh fallacy in itself is a fallacy, dumbass. Even then, saying "things eat and kill eachother for the circle of life to persist, it is natural" isn't even a fallacy. It's not just natural, it's essential. It HAS to be this way, you know with how energy must be transferred because it cannot be created nor destroyed or whatever. New life can't just spawn from nothing. The third paragraph is just nonsense so I'm going to courteously ignore it.

"However, one of the easy things we can do is raise awareness and fund research into possible ways preventing wild animal suffering."

We... already... do that...? Wildlife reserves, national parks, zoo's (which often home animals who have disabilities/other complications that would have prevented them from surviving in the wild), campaigns against rain forest deforestation and, cleanup efforts for trash in the ocean, humane societies for domesticated animals/pets, veterinarians...the list goes on and on.

Unless he means funding research for some never before seen bullshit where we can just end all suffering across all walks of life. In that case; no thanks. The government wastes enough of my money funding bullshit like military and schools that aren't even in my state.

To be a little existential, the problem is that if Redditors acknowledged that pain/suffering is as important an element of existence as any other and tends to be what drives things grow and thrive, that would require them to start asking some difficult questions about life, their beliefs, and how they conduct themselves.
Those are truths they're not prepared to face. Their entire existence hinges on an infantile mindset where they just know thing makes them feel bad now, so thing bad and adult scientists/politicians should make thing go away. Thing make them feel good now, so thing good and adults should give them thing.

Really it doesn't even require research, we already long since have the technology to end all suffering across all walks of life: it's called weapons of mass destruction. Kill everything and there's no more suffering. Fact is for happiness to exist there has to be something to contrast against it, and if a person wants none of that contrast that defines existence and only want to avoid pain then killing themselves would logically be the fastest way to accomplish that.

I disagree with people who insist you have to do the whole bible trad thing to accomplish this, but these people would be way less miserable if they developed a sense of humility and appreciation for their place in the universe rather than viewing nature as some stupid vestigial thing that, by default, should be bent into submission by force.
