Diseased Rowling Derangement Syndrome - "TERF/Woke Author Bad!!1"

Yup, totally agree. The question, if there ever was one to begin with, of whether the game sells big despite any controversy is a foregone conclusion. Since pre-orders went up on Steam alone, Hogwarts Legacy has consistently been in the number one position. So any posturing or making a show about "I'm not buying HL because fuck J.K. Rowling!" or "I'm buying HL to spite anyone not buying HL!" is ultimately pointless.

February 10th (the day Hogwarts Legacy releases) is going to be fucking insufferable.

Sorry, slightly off-topic. Do you guys think that Twitter moderation is still too pozzed to get away with starting a transphobe competition there and awarding the winners a copy of the game?

Asking for a friend, I'm definitely not retarded enough to waste hundreds of my own dollars just to piss of random trannies over a game I don't even want to play. No siree, no way, no how. Absolutely not.

It's kind of depressing how Avalanche Software (the Hogwarts Legacy devs) have a work history consisting almost entirely of making mid-to-average games, then getting dropped by their parent companies due to situations out of their control. I swear the entire studio must be cursed or something.

  1. In the late 90s, they worked with Midway and primarily worked on console ports of some of their other games. Most of the ports were fine, but the source games weren't great, as you can only polish a turd so much (they were responsible for porting Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero from PS1 to the N64, considered the worst MK game in the series). Midway eventually drops them.
  2. They then get acquired by THQ and make some Nickelodeon titles, most notably Tak and the Power of Juju. It was a big deal at the time because the game was not based on any of Nickelodeon's existing shows, and the positive reception was enough to make two sequels and greenlight an actual Nick show. THQ eventually has some financial issues, outsources plans for another sequel to a different dev, then tries to sell off Avalanche.
  3. Disney takes an interest and buys Avalanche, who ended up producing Cars 2 and Toy Story 3 (considered to be pretty solid tie-in games). They also work to develop Disney Infinity (that game that used the NFC figures) and collaborate with numerous well-known studios in the process, including Ninja Theory (DmC: Devil May Cry, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice), Studio Gobo (For Honor), Sumo Digital (Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, LittleBigPlanet 3), and United Front Games (Modnation Racers, Sleeping Dogs). Essentially, a lot of well-known companies who worked on major games helped them polish Infinity into something pretty impressive, warranting an Infinity 2.0 and Infinity 3.0.
  4. A few weeks after Avalanche announces a major expansion is in the works for Infinity 3.0, Disney announced the surprise cancellation of all development work on any further content for the game and shuts down all of their game studios. Avalanche is forced to scrap most of the work they did, with only a tiny amount of the planned major update seeing any fruition. Disney attempts to offer consolation to Avalanche by giving them permission to release a "Gold Edition" of the game on Steam (essentially, a version of the game that has all of the figure-specific content already unlocked), but doesn't give Avalanche enough time to add any of the new content, resulting in the final updates not existing in the Steam version in any form. Avalanche is not able to patch the missing content into the Steam version due to its license being revoked by Disney.
  5. Warner Bros saves Avalanche from shutdown by buying the studio after Disney pulled out. They work on Hogwarts Legacy, resulting in the devs getting spammed all over social media by gender-special people mad about Rowling having different opinions.

One aspect of this whole drama that is a bit underappreciated, I feel, is how statistically insignificant Rowling's royalties from the game truly are.

First of all, she is already filthy rich, whatever she gets from the game is miniscule compared to her already existing wealth.

Second, the books and the movies generate a whole lot more money, the books in particular are the kind of evergreen stuff that has insane staying power. Libraries and exasperated parent trying to get their brat(s) to read will always buy them.

Third and possibly the most important: The Wizarding World in Universal Orlando. The obscene amount of money Rowling gets from that one place is surreal. I mean, that's not real people money, that's the kind of sum you deal with in a 4X grand strategy game where you manage an entire fucking nation. Even if the trannies succeeded in their silly crusade(they didn't) Rowling wouldn't even notice it, that's how little it matters as a revenue source. Interestingly enough, the theme park never faced such a "boycott" due to her comments, curious isn't it?

I’m not too sure, but even using Twitter trying to entertain to the fact that there is a competition to see who can come up with the bigger insult as to how much JK Rowling is a “transphobe” (even though phobias are things that you’re supposed to be afraid of on a mental and physical level and not through a social/political ideology) is about as more time consuming and autistic than one could ever think of.

Overall, even using Twitter to begin with is the first mistake one can make.

Buying a video game is the same as killing 3 people with a gun and drunk driving (a) (a)

I My friend was thinking more along the lines of "What is the most transphobic thing you've ever done?" but you're right, he's being autistic at best, especially considering the doxing that would be required. Shit, this isn't even the thread I thought I was shitting up, sorry guys, all done.

These showed up in my "For You" feed yesterday (thanks Twitter?) and amused me, something about a protest stream organized by someone with only 7k Twitch followers and someone else "not having the spoons" to join. I'm interested to see what happens to people streaming it and if they end up getting bullied for no reason - it might open some eyes.

That's exactly what's going to happen. There is no if. The only question is who is affected. I think it will be smaller streamers because the big ones have a raging fanbase so bullying them won't end well for troons.

Look at it this way, when the game eventually breaks records, and become a bestseller, WB would have no reason to let them go since they'll be having something solid on their hands. Despite all the nonsense the trannies threw at the game, it eventually will lead to naught once the devs gets more bonuses, and more access to other IPs since WB's trust on them would grow from this success, and the good way they handled it.

And as collateral damage, troons have shown how genuinely toothless they are and how little influence they have on normal, non-child-molesting members of the buying public.

As I read the OP discussing how right wing loons and left wing loons both have (stupid) reasons to hate Rowling, I couldn't help but think that this is the prime example of how much the social justice crowd has stepped up to fill the niche that was occupied by the evangelicals until they lost cultural relevancy with the decline of the Bush presidency.

It's probably one of those names that gets used when an article is too much of a bad take for anyone to take credit, but they still want the clicks. Like how places like the Washington Post will pen a piece as "WaPo Staff" when they know for certain they're going to get flamed even by their own readers.
It's Sady Doyle - she has a thread here. Was a blogosphere-era feminist who trooned out when ultraporn aesthetic took over and made normal women feel like they weren't women anymore.
