Ok first of all I don't think anyone in this thread has said that Linux is without problems. I certainly haven't made this claim. What I and others have pointed out is that first the vast majority of users of any operating system don't leave their browser. Case in point, Chromebooks outsell Macbooks [0].

Keep using Windows then. I never want to hear about how much you hate Windows if you don't consider alternatives. If you wanted to try ReactOS you're able to do so for free as well. Microsoft could easily make it much more difficult to disable the telemetry. Apple doesn't let you block theirs, for example. If you jump through hoops to block Apple telemetry you will find many of your programs won't function properly.

I played around with this on a fresh laptop that came with it pre-installed and it is terrible. Far more locked down than what Apple does, you aren't allowed to install anything that isn't in the Windows store and you must have a Microsoft account to do so. Furthermore, you needed a Microsoft account just to change most of the configuration options like the update schedule, custom backgrounds and more.

I find it extraordinarily doubtful. Corporate users and legacy software support are Microsoft's bread and butter and the bullshit pulled early on with Windows 10 (and Windows 8, actually) was enough to make major players say "fix this or you'll never see another dime from us".

Apple can do what they want because everyone already knows what they're getting into buying into the Apple ecosystem. There aren't any Fortune 500 companies I know of with tailor-made software that only runs on MacOS.

They already tried to, or at least, they took the first steps towards that goal. Windows 10X lacked all of the "legacy" Windows components, only let you run Windows Store apps, mandated a Microsoft account and, AFAIK, completely prevented you from accessing things like the Windows folder, %AppData%, %USERPROFILE%, and the Registry.

And who gives a fuck about what runs on x86 architecture? Its the basis for a large majority of PC based processors, I would hope that most Linux distros would run on it.
