People as a whole tend not to actively pursue change themselves, but to shift their support to someone else who looks like they will. What the State has become frighteningly effective at doing is identifying potential leaders of revolt and dealing with them early on. Arrests if necessary, legal restrictions. And of course the use of modern day excommunication words that indicate someone is banned from society and those who treat with them will be punished ("racist", "transphobe", "extremist", whatever).
Someone who wants to provide an alternative to the general populace either has to be able to weather that head on or to stay below the radar by masking their opinions well enough that they can build a large enough following and gain a respectable voice before they can be nipped in the bud. But it's very hard to walk back from there once you take that route. Resentment can build but identifying and destroying the people who would normally rise to provide a focus for that resentment can put off actual pushback by the population.
Of the two approaches to countering this, I actually think meeting the attacks openly ("never apologise, speak your mind") is more effective on the whole than trying to "infiltrate the system". Most people need someone to rally behind.

Sanders is frumpy but her response was excellent, she played up her being a mom and dealing with the here and now and not listening to childlike lies about what's going on. She brings up the culture wars and how you have a right to fight back because you didn't start that fight, and remains loyal to Trump talking about how they went to Iraq and the troops loved him.
