OK, so then which of the conflicting vatnigger claims going around the Internet is correct: NATO wants a prolonged war, or the United States offered Russia 20% of Ukraine to end the conflict?

Its both, the early stage of the war in Feb looked like it was going to be a clean sweep by Russia as they were advancing faster than any army had done in recent history and were rapidly closing in on Kiev. NATO was likely in the begging stage trying to put the genie back into the bottle only for the hardliners to scuttle the peace process. Little did NATO know, Russia had insane ROE restrictions on the conflict that took almost a year to unwind. NATO wants it to be a fucking unbearable and draining slog for Russia but in the early days Ukraine looked like it was eating shit. I said all along not to trust those "control" maps since Russia was just lurching down this or that highway with almost zero units doing search and destroy in the areas behind the advance, this is where you get those ridiculous control maps where almost 2/3rds of Ukraine is controlled by Russia. Both sides have evolved to their current positions, Russia came in very confident of a slam dunk and NATO was extremely pessimistic. Its only around April that NATO really got a grasp that Russia's force deployment was anemic and Ukraine could just stretch them thin with militia units and blunt armored thrusts by hurling ATGM at armored columns nonstop.

The real take away is how powerful light weight, cheap drones have become and how effective light infantry riding around in technicals can be. Once Russia sorted their issues out the flaws in NATO's impromptu plan is becoming apparent, light infantry can blunt armored thrusts but they're highly vulnerable to artillery so we've devolved into this psuedo WW1 warfare. Ukraine is FUCKED long term because they have zero ways to go on the offensive in a serious manner and by luck Russia has shitloads of leftover artillery from the Soviet era to finger this vulnerability. Ukraine is bleeding men and material faster than NATO can reasonably supply it, eventually there is going to be a reckoning for Ukraine where they just cannot sustain this intensity any longer, the economy is shattered from the strategic bombing via drone/missiles and the loss of the Donbass, their male young adult population is being ground up by drone guided precision artillery bombardments and maybe 1/3rd of their young adult population has fled abroad and will never return. The nation is effectively doomed far more than any other on the planet, Russia just has to keep the war going and it will literally fucking depopulate Ukraine via destroying its male population, NATO is now in the position where it has to beg Russia to end the conflict because its becoming unbearable for the West both financially and materially, they got exposed, most NATO members CANNOT sustain a war effort at this intensity, even the US brass seems skeptical if we could handle this high level of equipment expenditure for long.

I don't know when the war is going to end, but it almost certainly is going to be favorable for Russia. We're just going to be forced to wait for this supposed offensive "in 10 days" to see how Russia performs, either a quick conclusion or an agonizing battle of attrition that hollows out Ukraine indefinitely.

We're just going to be forced to wait for this supposed offensive "in 10 days" to see how Russia performs, either a quick conclusion or an agonizing battle of attrition that hollows out Ukraine indefinitely.

There won't be a huge offensive especially in next 10 days. Mobilized units still haven't from the looks of it completely trickled down. And so far offensive actions are and most likely still will continue to be made by designated 'Expendables' like Wagner group and for the most part select combat-proved enlisted formations along with DNR/LNR forces that now have a official status in the Russian armed forces.

Launch more expensive missiles into civilian areas (genius strat, not at all unethical or wasteful).
Send in even more soldiers to some other town, opening a new Verdun for both sides to toss men into (my personal choice).
Bonus choice: Actually make a breakthrough using the superior anti-gay-Nazi-racially-inferior-holhol equipment: burned out tanks, fighters which don't last a second in the air, dumb fire artillery, rusted aks and corpses of brave russians. Seems unlikely to me, but maybe it'll happen.

Why not just wait until Mid-May? We know the Russians can sustain it.

An offensive like this means they've gathered material goods for it -- fuel, ammo, troops -- this is a large risk of being blown up in the modern era, also its a real fucking annoyance for Russia when their ammo depots get hit by HIMAR. Russia has been spreading their equipment and supply depots out to mitigate damage from missile strikes which is equally annoying, its just better to get the offensive over with rather than cede initiative to the enemy and risk the loss of this gathered equipment for no gain. Not to mention just sitting there doing nothing gives Ukraine far more time to prepare defenses for the assault, layer after layer of trenches, mines and tank traps. The offensive is going to suck for Russia in the first place, ATGM effectively nullify the armored breakthroughs of the past and make each village and city a total fucking slog to deal with.

For the record, I don't expect a breakthrough, I think Soviet "deep operation" is an obsolete doctrine. I expect Russia to advance in this offensive, face a repeat of Feb-April 2022 and immediately initiate several more Bakhmut style meat grinders instead.

One problem: ruzzia ALREADY started la grande offensiva, some week ago or so. It is going as poorly as used to be: they didn't take much land, they have no chance to move any further than Bakhmut.

I expect Russia to advance in this offensive, face a repeat of Feb-April 2022 and immediately initiate several more Bakhmut style meat grinders instead.
