Absolutely this. Ralph cannot stand to be sober because he cannot stand what it feels like to be him. All of his efforts to portray himself as “winning” are as much to try to convince himself as anybody else.

There’s a reason why Shakespeare’s “To thine own self be true” is quoted a lot in recovery circles. If you can’t be honest with yourself, your life is going to suck. Ralph is the poster boy for lying to yourself because the reality of his existence is intolerable.

Food was probably his first drug of choice as a kid. Then he got access to alcohol and drugs and was off to the races. Then gambling. Then taking trips to try to escape himself. He’s probably addicted to shit we have no idea about, including literal shit.

It isn’t unusual for people to lean into religion when they sober up. The whole 12 step program is based on the concept of a higher power. Modern AA tries to be secular and say the higher power isn’t always God, but it can be anything you put faith in.

Working the 12 steps has a lot to do with fixing the damage you did while drinking and using drugs. This naturally makes people less inclined to do “bad shit”. All recovery programs require you to be introspective about the past to insure you don’t repeat mistakes you made while in active addiction.

I know from first hand experience how hard recovery is and I never would have been able to do it alone. I believe Ethan Ralph is in denial about being an alcoholic and in his current state of mind isn’t strong enough to take on recovery.

I pray daily for all addicts and alcoholics as this disease ain’t no joke.
