I was reading the ResetEra thread and was thinking it would be better to discuss it here, looking back I'm really baffled on why the Wizarding World setting took off so well, when it was so poorly thought out and helmed by an obviously underqualified woman. It's interesting to compare and contrast it to something like Star Wars, where there's more attention to detail, but Wizard stuff took off faster. I didn't think the books were really better than their contemporaries when they were new in YA fiction. Did WB just pick a good foundation and fill it in with iconic tunes(John Williams) and little mascot-like details that were archetypal for infinite sales in our culture?

This is an incredibly retarded take. "Underqualified"?? For what exactly? Writing children's literature lmao? Why exactly are you comparing a film series that started in the 70s to a book series with a different target audience that started in the 90s? Harry Potter pretty much reinvented YA fiction. What contemporaries could you even be referring to? There was nothing like it.

No one who makes it as big as Rowling has does it because they have unmatchable talent or genius. She simply had an idea that was lightning in a bottle and she is a genuinely gifted and imaginative storyteller, even if not the most brilliant writer. You can't force kids to line up at midnight at bookstores just because WB made some fun movies.

Now it appears the same discussion has both radicalized and moved to Twitter and TikTok.

A poor argument on their part because for the publication of the majority of the series, section 28 was still in effect in part or all of the UK. It was a law in the UK that local authorities could not promote homosexual relationships. Her books would have been banned from schools if there was a positive gay character. The books were published in ‘97, ‘98, ‘99, 2000, [section 28 repealed in Scotland mid 2000], ‘03, [section 28 repealed in England and wales November 2003], ‘05, 07. I don’t know her storyboard timeline but I would presume that at earliest a positive LGBT story arc could have appeared in the last two books, likely only the last one.
