For me Far Cry 2 wasn't about gittin gud, it was trying to deal with the overwhelming tedium. Considering everything about the FC2 maps and missions were designed around funneling you into as many of those stupid fucking checkpoints as possible. I never felt small. What it did make me feel is "holy shit these maps are fucking tiny", and if you look at where you can actually walk around on the maps, something like 70% is totally inaccessible. which is just awful.

The best way of dealing with the checkpoints was finding a vehicle with a mounted machine gun, smash into the checkpoint, jump on the machine gun and just mow everyone down. That shit gets real old real goddamn fast. At some point you may get sick of that and realize that traveling by boat gets you to or at least close to many of the more important places, so instead of dealing with the exact same repetitive bullshit every single time you get to go put-put-puttering down the river for five to ten minutes at a time. It is the definition of tedium.

I never got the complaints around Far Cry 2's "respawns" and checkpoints, while Far Cry 3 somehow is hailed the greatest.

Like, what's the really big difference between respawning checkpoints and randomly spawning groups of enemies? Both games don't have the ability to shoot out of your vehicle, so you need to get out and engage them either way.

The massive difference, for me and I think a very significant amount of other people, is stealth. Stealth is just not a practical option for the vast majority of 2, but you can at least try to ghost a significant majority of 3 and all the others past 3 (and not just outposts, either, many missions both side and main). Sure it's bullshit video game stealth, but the takedowns and chains and just being able to do any of that was infinitely more fun than inevitably going loud on retarded bulletsponge assholes wearing teflon t-shirts every three minutes. I think that's why arguments over FC2 get so heated, one major style of play simply just isn't there so people end up screaming past eachother.

From my point of view I know I'm not alone in seeing FC2 like Asscreed 1 - the foundations of a game are there, but holy shit it really needed some serious work before it was a fun game.

You're not supposed to drive primarily in Far Cry 2. I think that's the trick a lot of people never figured out.

Also Git Gud, I managed stealth just fine. You need to buy the stealth suit and silenced weapons. It's a very specific playstyle that most wouldn't enjoy cause it's slow.

Far Cry 2 suffered from trying to be realistic. Malaria shots, degrading weapons, permanent missable collectibles. I'm glad it went more "gamey" with 5. Although I wish the technological advancements 2 brought would come back into some open worlds.

The Far Cry series after 3 is a literal embodiment of a tried and true video game. You could put 3, 4, Primal, 5, 6 next to each other; I'd be unable to tell the difference. It never deviates from being a video game, right down to its logic, mechanics, and storytelling.

Also, why does 5 and 6 have contrived gun mechanics? Oh, you have THIS gun with THIS ammo, therefore THAT enemy has more health. Why?

F5 New Dawn introduced that shitty bullet sponge/health bar mecanic.

Why does anything ever take more than one bullet? Take the tactical shooter pill.

It was a disaster there, it was a disaster in Youngblood, and its a disaster in FC6. No, there's no reason for having damage types in a fast-paced shooter game other than to fuck over players. AP rounds are fine, but they should do extra damage against armored enemies but be fine against the rest, and rare or expensive to have in quantity.

I actually really like regular Far Cry 5 but the weapon system in New Dawn was utter garbage. I got fed up enough with the grind that I did all the boss battles with Tier 3 weapons even though you really needed Tier 4 ones. I cheesed the first boss battle by hiding behind a door taking potshots and the second one by taking a few shots at the glowing vulnerability spots then running in circles waiting for my health to regenerate.

Biggest thing that I hated though was the writing, specifically surrounding the twins. Like there’s that SAW trap bit where afterwards they’re like “ok put all your weapons in this bag over here and handcuff yourself to the ceiling” and you just…do that. And then do the shocked pikachu face when you’re conveniently defenceless while they murder the friend they were holding hostage. Wat.

There’s their death scene too. You do the boss battle and then like 2 minutes before they die there’s a sad heartfelt cutscene shoehorned in where their mom tells them as little kids to take care of each other and it’s so weird because they’ve been terrible people with zero redeeming qualities for the entire game. It’s almost like they made the game without that cutscene in it and then late in development someone at Ubisoft went “oh shit, our hip hop enthusiast strong black female villains are two dimensional cardboard cutouts who pillage everything and murder everybody, somebody on twitter might think we’re racist! Somebody do something!”.

On the plus side though, I did enjoy the graphics. It’s interesting to have a post apocalyptic setting where everything is super psychedelic and colourful instead of brown and drab. Also this one song from the game’s OST is a banger:

Ubisoft must have fudged the numbers with Far Cry 6, huh? It's really weird it got some goofy interdimensional DLC a year later instead of the usual expansion style side game.

Chorizo is still one of the best characters they have created in a long time imo. Top tier up there with Ezio, Vaas, Kassandra, Sam Fisher, and Jade.

It's Ubisoft being Ubisoft as always. Their business strategies have always been completely questionable.

Far Cry's writers actually make some psychological villains. I don't see why they introduce them in the START, then forget about them until much later. 4's Pagan Minh is actually more interesting than 3's popular Vaas.

If Far Cry 7 could implement 2's survival and seriousness into the storytelling and game play, it could be more than just an open world power fantasy. But, it's Ubisoft. Copy and paste rules their franchises.

Posting here since I don't want to clog up the Playing Recently thread. I really am loving Far Cry 2. Even though it's aimless, the atmosphere alone is pretty great. Aiming to replay 3 when I'm done after a decade since my first playthrough. I'm not sure about 4 or 5 since they seem to try to recapture the magic of 3 without actually doing it or improving by much from what I've heard.

Far Cry 2 has the potential to be something truly great. If things were fleshed out more and made a bit more believable and less videogamey you'd have an awesome African merc simulator.

Ideally, a sequel to Far Cry 2 would be more like a high budget STALKER in Africa, and though I really like 3, I yearn for what could have been.

Far Cry 2 was pretty much wasted potential here. It had great levels, but were sadly cancelled out by being the exact same thing as the first, but in Africa.

The first and third Far Cry games are great shit. The second game screams sophomore slump.

Funny you say that, Far Cry 2 was less gamey than what FC became after 3.
