While this is very possibly and likely, I do believe it is *less* likely with the current state of the world and economy. Banks aren't doing as well right now, and most smaller/mid size banks showed little growth and profit over the last fiscal quarter to where they are cutting back where they can in an effort to reduce costs. Much of the same can be said for a lot of businesses right now.

So a bank eating losses right now won't be as common as it used to be in my opinion. But the banks wouldn't be going after the mongs, they would be gunning for the primary name on the lien, Paul's mom. They will weigh out the pros and cons and any risks associated with her and if it is feasible, they will go after her if payments stop. These situations however can take years of little to no movement, followed by lengthy litigations. People who know how to work the system especially in the case of short sales, can stall sales for an additional 1-2 years. I've seen situations like that took 3-4 years before the property was finally sold under a short sale all the while the current resident remained in the property without paying a dime for the mortgage.
