Lucas may be using cocaine. If he is doing so it is in combination with heroin--not at the same time though. Lucas did not have the funds for cocaine addiction and repeated overdoses when he was younger. Cocaine toxicity with fatal and near-fatal consequences is possible[1] but it is not likely to be what Lucas is referring to above. Most people who overdose on cocaine generally take themselves to the emergency department because they can do so, they are conscious and ambulatory and generally don't describe themselves as "almost dying". They are agitated, sweating profusely, in delirium, and tachycardic but don't subjectively feel that they are near death. Certainly, they feel distressed and confused but don't feel that their life is slipping away. The near-death that Lucas is referring to is the loss of consciousness that comes from a heroin overdose. The "phenomenology" or first-person subjective experience of a person experiencing a cocaine overdose is "I am losing my mind". That of the person's experiencing a heroin overdose is "I am going to die", just before slipping out of consciousness. The sentiment that comes with post-naloxone revival of the person that had overdosed on heroin is "I almost died."

this is just speculation on my part but part of me wonders if lucas may have also been stealing morphine from his dad seeing as his dad was dying from cancer and they do tend to give morphine to dying people to help ease the pain. if this was true it would explain how he got into heroin later on since im sure he also had plenty of drugs when he was trooning out in thailand or wherever the fuck it was. it would also mean that even if he did go to rehab and get clean his body and mind are already beyond fucked up.
