We even have a very recent, concrete example of the failures of peer review: Chen et al 2023, which was touted as showing that two years of cross-sex hormones improved trans-identified children's mental health. (It does not.)

The researchers pre-registered their hypotheses (what they would report on from the study) and … just didn't. They entirely left out most of the points they had said they would address, because the results didn't fit their desired outcome. The authors also stopped collecting some data part-way through the study for strange reasons. The peer reviewers apparently didn't have a problem with the authors junking their study protocol while the study was ongoing.

This was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, one of the most prestigious medical journals, where “at least five experts review and edit each Original Article.” To be clear, as The Lancet states on its website, “Peer review does not replicate or validate research.”

Only "I Fucking Love Science" midwits think "peer review" is particularly meaningful. In lot of journals these days it's little more than a rubber-stamp process. And all of the worst and most damaging studies in recent history were dutifully peer reviewed.

What really counts is replicability, and none of Tony's pro-medicalization studies have that. (Not that a lack of replication is even needed to see that they are bad studies, as @Geranium noted.)
