My current theory is Nick told him to leave Cozy, this caused the retiring arc, supported by the fact he changed it and said that he was actually just retiring from cozy specifically before saying the whole thing is a work.

I really don't think Nick gives a shit about anyone's numbers but his own. There are streamers on there that stream to 15 people.
And since Cozy has no ad income each viewer actually costs them money. If a viewer is not paypigging then that viewer has negative value. Nick is paying out of pocket for the bandwidth.
