racing games - no not racist games you fucking ni

Japan just won the propaganda game
A fun little diversion is to go on the Gran Turismo wiki and read the in-game descriptions. 90% of them - particularly the race cars - read like

"This MONSTER NISSAN boasted a 10 TRILLION horsepower engine, 18-SPEED SEMI AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION and QUADRUPLE OVERHEAD CAMS to deliver an amazing POWER TO THE ROAD!

"Unfortunately, the Nissan was beset with mechanical issues. Despite fighting bravely, Masahiro Tanaka was only able to bring the car to a fourth place finish in the 1994 Super GT."

But the drifting is neat.

The next expansion for FH5 is Rally Adventure:

I would have preferred a Blizzard Mountain 2.0 expansion, so there can be at least one place that has snow, if you don't count the small snowy area in the Hot Wheels expansion, and the snow on the mountain in the Winter season on the regular Mexico map.

Does Mexico even get snow?

You guys familiar with modding in Assetto Corsa or playing driving or racing simulators with an actual Sim rig to kinda get as close of a feeling to a irl racing or driving experience as much as possible? Trying to buy yourself a cheap car to mod and drive around is pretty much impossible where I live (Cheapest cars being worth decades of "decent" wages) not like anywhere else in the more "developed" world where you kinda go to a junkyard or a used car lot and can find from old RWD corollas to High Mileage MR2s.

From what I've seen, racing sims can get just as expensive or more than a cheap beater car you can hoon around on the track. People put pneumatic shocks to simulate the motions to the racing seat and that's super costly.

I don't think there are any consumer grade rigs that's pneumatically powered (Most use systems of electronically controlled stepper motors and maybe small hydraulic actuators) but I get that the ones pros use can easily go upwards of $50k+.
In the more developed parts of the world, beater cars are definitely easier to come by for cheap. I've been to a couple of Junkyards in Australia and they have beater cars that you can turn to a racing one with a less money than a full Sim rig. My coworker at the time had 2 Mazda Miatas salvaged from a junkyard that he both turned to racing cars for around $4000 (and a lotta elbow grease). A full sim rig here with a basic two degrees of freedom costs around $2000-3000 here (Mine's valued around that much) but that's a far cry from a decent salvageable beater car here. It would easily cost triple that and that's not counting the cost of putting it back to working order (spare parts are a bitch to import). The more cheapo beater cars here are all FWD minibuses that's definitely not built for any sort racing unless you want to always tip over at every turn lol. Also, there aren't many places here where you can put the pedal to the metal in a large airfield or abandoned farmland or anything of that sort.

I buy The Crew - after a decade of hohumming about it - and those fucking assholes put Crew 2 on sale literally the day after.
Now, what am I better off with? As is I already filed for the refund and probably get Crew 2. My thinking is this, as a racing game, Crew seems kind of garbage (I had just finished the Prologue). I like racing in open world games oftentimes because the car can actually get smashed up, even kill you, cars handle with weight. So I'm sure there's probably better racing experiences out there from just a gameplay perspective. Narrative, eh, I know Crew 1 has the underground racing stuff but I could care less about that in this case (not opposed to narrative in a sports game, I can just tell this is not going to be interesting to me).

Big thing for me is that I'm interested in playing around on the little mini-US and since Crew 2 has boat races you can do what I want to do in real life, toodle up and down the big rivers (and since it's a game the rivers link up in ways they don't in real life so you can get even further). I figure I'll just get Crew 2, no plot but get to barnstorm and sail my rivers.

The crew is dated and janky, The Crew 2 uses the same map, has its charms but also jank. It's my go-to relaxing game. The Crew: Motorfest just got announced. Set in Hawaii.

FH5 is probably the best racing title out there atm. I had my reservations about it but I've gotten into it and it's really amazing. Has its flaws, it's issues etc but always makes up for it
Of all the settings they could do and they pick Hawaii? That's like the exact opposite of the point of the game (to have a massive map that feels like a world.

They should have done map expansions to extend into Canada/Alaska, Mexico/Central America, even Caribbean for air/sea. Or a sequel in Europe or part of Europe.

This is the true racing game right here

Raycevick has recently put out a very insightful video, I actually agree with him on everything. I remember enjoying racing vidya a lot more, and looked forward to playing many variations of racing games.

NFS: Most Wanted is truly the last NFS game I've ever enjoyed. NR2003 still has an active community, decades after its release. Across the board, racing games have been rather bland, and what he said about microtransactions and DLC, holy fucking shit I didn't know it was that bad.

It proves that sim racers are the most gullible and retarded of all gamers, shelling out money like that, and perpetuating those scummy practices.

It's also one of the reasons I might just pull the trigger on a GTX4090 just so I can play BeamNG like God intended.

Ermin also agrees that BeamNG is, as a sandbox game, probably the best racing sim you could play right now.

crew 2 is a weaker entry.

I ended up just getting both (since I refunded another game too). I figure if I want to drive I can do it on The Crew (more landmarks, mechanic of having to manually discover places) and if I want to boat or fly I can do it on The Crew 2. Both together is just $15.

I think I might go to my game store closeby to pick The Crew 2, if it is available that is.

That's a Steam sale price, not the sticker price.

The Crew seems okay. Kind of ugly even in the original. Thought the landmarks were going to be one of those where you find individual places and it unlocks encyclopedia entries on them, if it is I can't find it. I knew the map would frustrate me and it does, because the South in the game consists of Louisiana and Florida and a little weird transition zone that sort of jumbles everything else together. No Atlanta, of all things, and no red clay or piney appearance, it just kind of flips like a switch from swampy/caribbean to autumnal Northeast or generic Midwest. (First thing I did was beeline for Key West.) No Carolina coast, Charleston's a small city but it and the Lowcountry have their own vibe with cool architectural styles and ghostly Spanish moss swamps, and the Outer Banks could have been a nice chain of islands (like Key West is). No Boston or Philadelphia either, which is strange, the whole East Coast is just one big great wilderness outside of NYC. But can't expect anything better. Radio music is abysmal, both in variety and specific selections.

One thing I do admire about this game so far is that it has figured out how to make driving long distances engaging, you include little challenges, optional, that pop up all along the way, like slaloms, race as fast as you can, drive through the targets, stuff like that. Perfect example of building activities into travel so the player doesn't get bored.

Still gonna go to my local game store tomorrow to scavenger some classic racing games.
