Remember when Erin Reed talked about being religious and having a volunteer position at his Christian church? Guess the old

How do you think Tony'd manage the high likelihood that he'd end up taking care of a child with a fetal alcohol disorder?
Some characteristics I've seen in adopted children with FASD:
- dangerous and illegal sexual behavior:
--- inviting strangers, including, who they met online, into the family home. this resulted in one family being robbed by the stranger.
--- having sexual conversations with children online, when they are an adult
--- using an iPad at work to take sexual photos and send to strangers online, not realizing that the workplace monitors the device
--- getting into strangers cars to have sex
--- having unprotected sex with strangers resulting in multiple STDs
- needing to live in an out of home placement (group homes)
- getting kicked out of several group homes
- compulsive stealing
- physical and verbal aggression, hitting their adoptive parents, saying the absolute worst things you can think of to the parents or siblings
- need for lifelong support for housing and employment
Many children with FASD won't show symptoms at birth, many will only start showing behavioral issues in later childhood or teen years, something you can't screen out during an adoption process unless you are somehow totally certain the mother did not consume any alcohol during pregnancy. They need extremely committed, understanding, loving families. They aren't a prop for your fucking narcissistic delusion that you can ever be a mother. You are simply a dickless perv who should stay way from kids.

As someone who regularly participates in the peer review process, I suspect that Tony doesn't actually know what it entails or how reviewers for a given article are chosen.
Your peer review is only as good as your peers. If anything, the current reproducibility crisis in science should give us pause when reading any academic paper, even in the most prestigious journals. All of the papers retracted for fraud have been peer reviewed by someone.
Peer review or not, the academic publishing industrial complex is profoundly broken. Just like Tony.

Most people seem to think peer review actually checks and confirms things when it's more like making sure obvious garbage doesn't pass. Often nobody even checks the math: I can't find it right now but I wanted to link to a blog post from a scientist who found some Chinese dude published a bunch of studies in (I think otherwise decent) journals where the data was mathematically impossible, the professor refused to release his data, "corrected minor errors" that were still mathematically impossible, the school defended the professor, the journal refused to do anything, etc. (Eventually the Chinese government got involved and so the journal finally retracted.)
This isn't to mention where you can pass garbage because everyone is ideologically compromised, the Sokal Hoax is probably more relevant today than it was back then. And I don't even mean this in political terms, I mean if you stick to conventions in the field you can pass garbage through, being politically correct just makes it easier. One of Sokal's criticisms was people bringing in things from outside their field and getting them wrong, I see this in papers all the time still. I've even pointed out to people papers/people using statistics that don't mean what they're saying (like confusing relative and absolute numbers) and nobody cares because they don't know any better and the results "confirm" assumptions in the field lmao pls kill me
To come back to Tony, he has absolutely no clue that people in the same field call out Turban's garbage because he probably can't read their critiques and understand them even if he was willing to entertain the possibility that Turban made an error or worse. Tony is probably not aware, nor does he care, that absolute cranks and fraudsters can publish at the top of their fields for their entire career.

I see more robust substack comments regarding papers. Peer review was already fishy when AGW - global warming - was all the rage. Now it's in the COVID camp. It happens a lot when papers on ethnic differences are published. When the Floyd riots happened, Nature came right out and said such research would never be published. So yeah, peer review is very select.
