Most people seem to think peer review actually checks and confirms things when it's more like making sure obvious garbage doesn't pass. Often nobody even checks the math: I can't find it right now but I wanted to link to a blog post from a scientist who found some Chinese dude published a bunch of studies in (I think otherwise decent) journals where the data was mathematically impossible, the professor refused to release his data, "corrected minor errors" that were still mathematically impossible, the school defended the professor, the journal refused to do anything, etc. (Eventually the Chinese government got involved and so the journal finally retracted.)

Jan Hendrik Schön passed 100s of papers through peer review in the 90s, well before you could squeak whatever through on ideological bullshit- simply by being agreeable. His numbers were weird if downright impossible in some case, and people who should've known better let him publish these things over and over, simply because 1) he was a nice guy, 2) nobody could be bothered to attempt to recreate his results, 3) many of the peers doing the reviewing didn't have any knowledge of the field, and just assumed he was right. Peer review as a process has never existed to determine credibility- it exists to maintain some standard for presenting findings.

The first drag ban has passed in Tennessee, and goes to the governors desk.
It could easily ban pride. It bans public drag. It bans transgender people performing, who are just living their lives.

I am very concerned about all the ways that current criminal laws and new acts will be disparately enforced against trans people and drag performers but I think the widespread commentary on Tennessee's "drag bill" is wrong.

The bill was amended and the amended text prohibits certain enumerated acts including "male or female impersonators". But the prohibition is operative only when the performance is ALSO deemed "harmful to minors" as already defined under TN law.

Current law is already being weaponized to target trans people, pride and drag. But I don't think it is accurate to say that most drag would meet the strict obscenity test.

I have exactly zero faith in law and law enforcement. But I also think we should report on what bills actually say and do. Tennessee's drag ban is linked to a very strict legal test and does not "ban all drag in public".

Slightly off-topic but I've wondered about this. A lot of troons have reported needing to hold their moobs in place as they walk up/down the stairs but this does not seem to be a thing that actual women do.

Theory: Do men and women walk up and down the stairs differently? Because my bedroom used to be right next to the staircase when I was growing up, and I could always tell whether it was my mom or dad walking up & down the stairs just by listening. My dad tended to sound like a herd of elephants while my mom's movements were more slow and deliberate. Maybe this is why they suddenly find themselves having to hold their moobs?

Though I agree that it is more likely a fetish informed by the unrealistic portrayal of women's bodies in porn, anime, videogames, etc.

This is fucking dumb. The phrase "appeals to [the] prurient interest" comes from the 1973 Supreme Court case Miller v California (and probably has an older history than that).

The meaning and reach of the phrase has been exhaustively tested in court. No one's going to get a troon arrested for telling a naughty joke in a bar.
