I remember reading the valued brigades with Western training/materiel intact were withdrawn some time ago, hence the drive to replace them with any conscripts they could find, to give those, and only those, military units time to withdraw. This is presumably before the dam was destroyed, so sometime within the past 14 days, when it became clear to even the most optimistic holhol general Bakhmut was going to fall. Any armor/artillery still there right now is staying there.

I believe its mostly gone though, I think @870EVO post the video earlier of the Ukie soldier saying they asked for artillery but there was no response at all.

They're moving reinforcements into the blender, probably to avoid a complete collapse of the lines and allow a withdrawal of some kind. So they haven't abandoned the guard troops entirely (wildly unlikely) or there are still high value professional units trapped in the city, or they're utterly insane and are legit throwing more troops into the cauldron to die because Zelensky is on a coke binge or they're worried about the optics or something.

Bakhmut was a lost cause as soon as Soledar fell to Wagner. Everyone knew this, especially the Ukrainian military leadership. They should have been organising a planned withdrawal 2 months ago whilst making the capture of Bakhmut as expensive as possible for the Russians. They didn't and it turned into a slaighter. The reason that there's so many geezers and kids in Bakhmut isn't so much to allow for regular units to withdraw but because the regular units are mostly dead and all Ukraine has is kids and geezers.
