Disney Adults / Disneymania

Clearance sections are your friend. Especially if you don't want to buy secondhand. Everything goes on clearance eventually. There are also places like the Mattel toy store in Middleton, WI that sell "damaged" goods. I put "damaged" in quotes because most of them just have beat-up packaging and the product itself is perfectly fine.

In all honesty, I'd struggle to class someone who has a massive collection of mostly secondhand Disney merch as a Disney Adult. Part of being a Disney Adult is urgency. They need everything new the instant it comes out. By the time something goes on clearance, there's something new that they need to have.
If you can find a good deal on something and it's in good condition, I see nothing wrong with it. Take blu ray stores that resell discs. Cheapest way to get a Disney collection for your kids AND you won't need Disney plus. That and no money hits Disney's pockets. It's what's my sister is doing for her kids.

The only Disney merch I own is related to Disney Channel save for a doll or two. Disney Channel gets a fresh roster of characters and IPs regularly. The stuff Disney adults obsess over is mostly just the same shit over and over. Disney as a whole has always been so... everywhere that it's suffocating. It doesn't help that studios aren't too keen on investing in new IPs these days. Disney is just. so. boring.

Well the nephews like Pixar and stuff like star wars, so we kinda have to oblige a little bit. Lego sets, movies, stuff like that. It would be nice if they made some new IP's, or at least Revive some old ones? Anyone remember Tron and Tron Legacy? Absolutely fantastic, even had a little animated show... then they bought star wars and it's been dead since.

Pretty much. The fight over the rose gold Minnie Mouse ears nearly kicked off WW3 on Disney forums.

Disney knows what they're doing too. They just rolled them out slowly to random gift shops so you'd have to check them all and rack up impulse purchases along the way.

It's also no coincidence that the two big gift shops in Magic Kingdom that carry the shit that Disney adults want are on opposite ends of the park (the one on Main Street close to the entrance and the one in the carnival area of Fantasy Land.)

The Mouse knows how to extract money from people, whatever the demographic.

Names come with expectations whatever we want them or not. This isn't all powerful of course, many names have changed their images by new people who have them but an unfortunate name can still be unnecessary obstacle.
Completely agree. It's why I tell people "Names is powerful magics". It's kind of a joke in how I phrase it, but at the core I do think you should be thoughtful when naming things, especially children.

If the name is unusual and clearly connected to disney, just pick something else. The jokes are going to get old fast and it will hard to form your own social image against the huge cultural phenomenon. The kid is likely to need a nickname or funny pronunciation if even that works. There is a good chance your kid will hate their name and think you're a complete moron. So don't take that change.
Kids will mock names no matter what, but if you name your son "Simba" you're just giving them extra ammo.

I'm not sure if this has been posted here yet, but last year around June, some disney adults tried to get hitched at Disneyland Paris and had their proposal ruined by an employee wearing a bi colors shirt.

Anyone know if the couple actually accepted the apology or got hitched at that shit hole?

Sometimes I wonder if the names would be that bad if the parents just didn't admit that they were "Inspired by Disney".
"Kiara" just means "Light/clear" (and coincidentally, also, "cockatoo")
Ursula bit rougher, but not nearly as bad as it would have been in the 90s.
You're right that Ursula is a name with a strong history, but I think the issue she has is that her parents named her specifically after a fat old evil witch, instead of just avoiding telling her and others the reason why they named her Ursula. Which would be an even bigger issue in the 90s/early 00s when the name Ursula was mostly synonymous with the film. At least naming your kid Ariel means she can associate herself with a pretty mermaid princess.

Naming your kid Phasma is cringy enough what with its association with evil ghosts, stick bugs and a mediocre fictional villain, but giving your kid the first name "Captain" is just mortifying. Its like if Ursula's parents named her "Seawitch Ursula" instead of just Ursula. That reeks less of oblivious Disney fanaticism and more like a subconscious hatred towards the baby.

Sound advice. I'd wager there's a Disney licensed thing in every house in North America. There's a huge difference between "owns The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh on DVD" and "goes into debt to visit the Magic Kingdom."

When I think of Ursula, I think more of its Little Dipper connection than cartoon octopus witch. She'll get Disney jokes for sure but some people will see it as a German old lady name. Kleine Uschi won't stay a little girl forever though so I think it's fine.

Perfectly fine names that have more than their Disney connections- Peter, Wendy, Jane, Alice (she will grow up to despise MTFs), Tiana, Anna, Hans, Olaf and Kristoff (only if you aren't American), John, Andy, Marie, Aurora, Jasmine (fine if you aren't a eunuch boy-man on TLC), Eric, Philip
A name that has Disney connection and your children will be slightly teased- Ursula, Esmerelda, Hercules (little boys still get named Jason), Elsa, Mickey (as a nickname), Merida, Bruno, Sebastian
Why do you hate your children- Snow White, Cinderella, Belle, Quasimodo, Jafar, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan, Rapunzel, Gaston, Simba

Point of order: the name "Wendy" did not even exist before Peter Pan. It derives from a small child's mispronunciation of "Friendly."
I guess you learn something new every day

Apparently it was a male surname well before becoming a female first name

But that wasn't Disney, that was J M Barrie in the original book. Popularized by the film, though? No doubt.
I guess my point is there must have been a period where people griped about someone naming their daughter "Wendy," and nowadays most people aren't even aware of the connection. It's a funny world sometimes.
I still don't think you should name your kid "Anakin" or "Phasma."

Even "Anakin" is better than Phasma since it comes from "Annakin" which is a Germanic surname meaning "Eagle's Son".
"Anno"/"Arno" = Eagle
"-kin" = Kin

Didn't one of these peter pan's get fired (for no real reason) bc tumblrites were posting about them and the interactions they had or something? I vaguely remember some cringe shit about a Peter pan seeing someone's attention whore self harm scars and giving some sappy speech about how strong they were or something and the Tumblr crowd fawning over him for it.
The story was one of those "and everyone clapped" ones.
Spider-Man's innocence is at risk! Ignore all the death and misery that has been in Peter Parker's life. He is a sheltered innocent boy!

Ohh. So having extensive knowledge of Disney is a bad thing? Damn. Damn.

Because I am a literal Lion King junkie. Not really in the merch department but I can tell you right now this was the Star Wars of my youth.

At least until Pokémon.

Up until recently I was also a huge Big Hero 6 fan, then... It came out with that terrible sequel in the form of a series and I don't even know what to tell you about the Baymax shorts.

God I cringe. If there was ever a good Disney sidekick, it was a medical marshmallow.

It's not knowledge, it's what you do with it.
Is the Lion King your autistic special interest? No one gives a fuck.
Did you buy yourself a multi-thousand-dollar lion fursuit? Are you in debt because of your insatiable Nala lust?
Well, then we have reason to be concerned now.

Oh hell no.

I can barely afford to go to the movies, you pay damn near 40 bucks just for one person.
