Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

It was interesting seeing the clips they showed at the Oscars of all the animated nominees, all of these beautiful or cute moments, and Turning Red's was just "I LIKE GYRATING, MOM! I'M 13! DEAL WITH IT!" That's the dialogue? :lit:
Honestly the Oscars sound like it wasn't too bad this year.

Let's try this thread.

Is it worth it, or even safe, to give money to Watch Cartoon Online now that they've got their hand out? Do any other sites host such an archive where I can get my extralegal manchild fix?

Wait, that scene was supposed to be deleted? I swear i actually saw that scene on TV when i had the disfortune to see Son of the Mask
There was a time when some live-action movies was shown in tv, there was some additional scenes who was filmed for tv release like for example, that scene from the movie Earthquake. Maybe that scene was an additional scene filmed for the tv release of Son of the Mask.

Watched Rise of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and unfortunately triggered this Seth Rogan movie monstrosity. That said I think rottmnt got too much shit for what it was. I remember years ago ppl shitting on it cuz the dyslexic crew member struck again and made the ginger black as well as a changes in tone, but once I sat down to watch it I thought it was pretty fun.

Never watched any of the past iterations besides an episode or 2 so I can't list everything they changed, but on its own its a flashy episodic monster-of-the-week action-comedy. The turtles are nice and play off each other well and the resulting banter is my personal favorite part of the show. Splinter in this show is an ex-kung fu actor whose become jaded from losing his fame by being mutated. He mostly slacks off but still has enough skill to lecture the boys from time to time.

Most of the other characters are pretty bare bones in comparison. April is just kinda there. Like the eps were its her and Donnie or Splinter are nice but outside of that she either gets overshadowed by the other characters or is just not interesting. Same with some of the recurring villains like the crab wrestler twins or the repo mantis which just exist to be bad guys to beat up.

The biggest problem with the series is that it doesn't really explain/setup stuff too well. For example, the main villian of the first season Draxum hates humans and wants to mutate them and wipe them out because they forced the yokai underground but they dont really show much mutant-human racism (I thought mutant prejudice was a big thing in TMNT lore but idk) or go into depth about how and why the yokai were driven away. And he later has a redemption arc solely because Mikey went Steven Universe for a bit and decided that he can be redeemed.
It's mostly the fault of trying to cram so many characters in a season of 11 min episodes. I'm sure an extended run time and cutting some of the cast would have helped a lot.

The animation and artstyle are pretty good. The art kinda looks like a cartoonier version of Genndy's Clone Wars and the action is very fast and kill la kill-esque. You can tell a lot of detail went into the animation but anyone who says this can give anime a run for its money is coping. Outside of the season finales, most of the action scenes has noticable less frames which they hide by making everything move so fast before you notice. Not saying it's ugly or lazy I'm sure this pushing the budget hard but the gaijins still have a long way. Still one of the best animated network cartoons within the last 5-7 yrs tho.

If you're gonna watch anything from it I'd recommend: (S1): Shell in a cell, The Purple Jacket, Mind Meld, The Ancient Art of Ninja Hide and Seek, Jupiter Jim Ahoy. (S2): Lair Game, Pizza Puffs, Clothes Don't Make The Turtle.

Honestly the worst thing you can say about ROTTMNT is that it's not like past TMNTs, its wants to focus more on comedy and the turtle's dynamics as a team and I dont think it's a bad show for that. If it wasn't caught within the flaps of an existing IP and the fatter more pungent flaps of Nickelodeon then I think it would have had a better chance of succeeding and maybe even fixing its flaws. But you can only feel so much pity for a reboot.

Them ADHD niggas still calling this new TMNT movie a Seth Rogen movie when he literally had nothing to do with it except being a producer. It's like almost a decade when people wrote off the 2010s TMNT live-action duology as Michael Bay movies when he also had nothing to do with it except for producing. They never bother to do research. Seriously, just call them shit because the new one is shit.

The shit might feel insulted to be compared to the new TMNT movie. :story:

Considering the showrunner of that pile of shit is a fag himself... it doesn't surprise me...

Ahh ffs, Producers! Children are not interested in having gay politics preached at them!! I guess since animation has now mostly become a soapbox to preach their own ideals rather than tell compelling stories this will sadly be the norm for the foreseeable future. Its why animation is objectively getting stale. Its distressing.

In other news Cellspex releases her take on the new TMNT movie, I personally think it'll definitely eclipse the 2007 animated movies and the trashfire Michael Bay films but in all honesty I'm not really a fan of the whole Lower frame rate style of animation that Spiderverse pioneered now. The art style is admittedly very pretty but the low frame rate isn't impressive, it just reminds me of a chugging cutscene from a PS1 game at this point. To each their own I guess.
shes fat and thus has dumb opinions on shows

Turning Red was extremely average as a film, even if you ignore the so called 'predatory' stuff in it, It was just a very run of the mill coming of age story about some chink learning to be accepting of becoming a teenager and going against her mothers wishes. I don’t think it really deserves all the weird vitriol people here have to it rather than I think it’s just very dull and middle of the road weeb and pre-teen pandering bullshit that does not deserve a academy award nomination. I am personally glad Pinocchio got the win even though I think puss in boots 2 deserved it more but that’s just me.

Disney bringing Turning Red to the table tells you everything you need to know about the current state of the company. Aside from the weird shit it's just plain bland, which is even worse than being terrible. It may not be tomorrow, next year, or even the next decade until they go under but the writing is on the wall. All they produce now are remakes and pointless sequels. Any new IPs are forgettable not only because they aren't pre-established franchises but also because they're just as if not more forgettable than the remakes.

This clip was posted in the Disney adults thread and even though it's for copyright reasons it's kind of ironic because of how true it really is. If you asked Gen Z or even Millennials what the most iconic cartoon character is they'll likely say Minions and Spongebob. Mickey is only iconic to the older generations.

Turning Red's was just "I LIKE GYRATING, MOM! I'M 13! DEAL WITH IT!"
They wanted her to say twerking but oh right set in 2002 when that sorta thing didn't exist (among 13 year olds at least. Look I know it's a dead horse argument at this point but turning red wanted so badly to be set in current year to appeal to zoomers on tiktok. You can see the current year in that movies skin just itching to break out and go full 2022 cringe.

unrelated Edit: The fact that "twerking" is not recognized as a word by the software, has restored some of my hope for us humans...some.

Any love for the Oscar winner for the Best Animated Short, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse? Very comfy and beautiful, with every scene a painting.

The Boy gives Christopher Robin vibes and the animals have great personalities, especially the mole. Also some great animation:

Was Turning Red really last year? It feels like it came out at least 2 years ago but here we are...
Someone in the 2010s thread said it best. Things have gotten so crazy, not helped by the trump/Biden years, blm, the covid pandemic, and Russia. That the tail end of the 2010s just flew right by and now time itself is rushing by just to get all the crazy over and done with sooner and sooner.
Also I could've done without the allegorical prostitution. People pay to see her panda, take pictures, touch her, ride her. Maybe it's just me but that shit was uncomfortable.

If turning red was allegorical, at least it would have been more subtle, but subtle went out the window a long time ago.

sflix.se (sometimes they change the country code) is mainly for films but I found episodes of Venture Bros. and other cartoons there too. It has the same annoying pop-ups like a lot of such sites and I never dared trying to download anything but other than that it's fine.
