Microsoft is fucking butthurt no one wants Windows 11 so they're stopping the sale of Windows 10 licenses this month

If you or anyone is really going to suggest that you have higher uptime or reliability demands than enterprise clients who actually Linux on a day-to-day basis to run their businesses
There is no significant distinction between Linux for server and Linux for desktop when excluding for certain edge cases. Calling Linux unstable is simply false by Microsoft's own admission.

Just about every rolling-release version of Linux is horrendously unstable shitware that manages to create new and hilarious ways to break computers on a regular basis. Seriously, fuck off with this shit. Some of these distros break so frequently that you might as well be using Windows 95. Claiming otherwise just shows you know next to nothing about enterprise Linux or its users.

Enterprise Linux users generally won't touch rolling-release distros, to the point that when the CentOS Project announced that they were prematurely EOLing CentOS 8 and going rolling-release, it caused a minor panic as everyone rushed to find a replacement (btw, it's Rocky or Alma). For servers, enterprises primarily rely on RHEL, with SLES as a distant second, and on workstations, Ubuntu LTS shows up now and then; some ISVs will test on it along with RHEL and SLES. Most of these random goofball distros that the "Switch to Linux!" crowd insists are a replacement for Windows are trash, and major ISVs won't even try to support them.

Referencing ChromeOS' surge in popularity is relevant when arguing that people will use Linux, current Linux users probably won't want to use it for myriad reasons but it is a user-friendly Linux that has decent market share.

As for Linux's lack of market share, that's to be expected and isn't folly. If you want a desktop OS to be popular you have to ship it pre-installed on hardware people buy when shopping. There's no money in it for a dark horse company to ship Linux like that and Microsoft isn't a good enemy to have for a small fry. Google's ChromeOS is Linux with a cloud-oriented use case that I argue reinforces my point that people tend to live in the browser nowadays.

Most OS users are terminal, using whatever their choice is through thick and thin even if it means running an extremely outdated OS. I suspect Microsoft is ok with this as they know when it comes time to get a new computer it will have the latest and greatest. ™️ Bill Steve Satya wins no matter what.

"I DONT LIVE IN THE BROWSER!" Yeah not everyone does, particularly not in a tech subforum on a kiwi agricultural board.

Skimming this thread and man, the Australian government really we’re turning chads for forcing null to keep software working on windows xp all those years
We're running VisiCalc on an Apple II to run a $2-million dollar business. During the pandemic, people called into it over a landline and used telnet work remotely during the pandemic. We did our remote meetings on a Mystic BBS board. I killed my boss in Red Dragon and got a raise.

GUIs are for absolute faggots. I'm posting this in Lynx.

Microsoft is trying so hard to make Windows anything but Windows right now. From making 11 look like a chrome book rip off to dipping their shady and dirty little hands into Linux as well as trying to influence and eventually control the open source community. But they will no doubt keep the name 'Windows' to keep hinting they are always peeking in.

Their vision is to one day have "GNU Windows TNEE 'There's No Escape Edition'" that will pretty much be a cloud only internet dependant dummy station with no real meaningful hardware other than the ability to access cloud files and whatever Stream Only game services exists at the time.

All while your personal files, sites you visit, games you play and the porn you jerk off to being sent to advertisers, insurance companies, social scoring systems and of course law enforcement. Just in case they're looking for someone who who fits the 'anti-gubbermant' pre-crime initiative simply because you played Sons of the Forest longer than you should have and having purchased some camping gear from Amazon and maybe some shells from your local gun retailer.

Hunting and camping? Nah! You must be planning some kind of insurrection! GNU Windows saw your pupils dilate when you killed those savages on your game you sick fuck!

computers got worse when they started making them for niggers women, niggers women are afraid to use command prompt keyboard input, white people men aren’t afraid to use the command line non gui features

I'm still puzzled why you had such a hard time. I don't even know how "the wrong hardware" can even be an excuse though.

That being said I just rebuilt my gaming PC and put Win 10 LTSC IoT on it aand had zero issues.
Thats exactly why windows is so dominant. You install it, it works. You need not ever think about it again if you so wish.

Linux is for people who do nothing but browse the web and a few basic tasks, or nerdy types who code shit. Anyone else is fucked.

Gaming is shite, no matter what they say, cramming those shitty flash games to pad out the proton score doesn't impress. Check out the popular games, its shite.

Not to mention, I make music. Thats fucking shit on linux, and those idiots always suggest some casio keyboard shite as a replacement for industry level VST/i's. I suspect video and shit is the same, the top guys will need to use a windows or mac shit.

Bro, that's an edge case.

Lots of people make music these days, its a huge industry. In fact its so powerful and large, it has completely changed the way the music industry works. I just know music, I bet video and other art forms are all the same. Lots of people work from home, and often those very specific applications will not work on linux. And whilst each little industry that does that is small, its happens so often its a large number.

The casual market is near dead as well, who uses a computer if they are just wanting to surf and youtube? they will use their phone for surfing and social media, and their tv likely has netflix etc built into it. Using a linux desktop makes even less sense for them.

That's the joke. Sorry. I assumed you'd read the whole thread.
I was just responding before the linux evangelists could... Save them the trouble of typing it out.

These are Linux nerds and Linux nerding is their primary hobby, but they think that qualifies them to weigh in on what's Just As Good(TM) in every category of FOSS, no matter how out of their technical depth it puts them.

I see a lot of recommendations for Guitarix as a Linux guitar amp sim replacement and while it's an interesting little toy, as an actual tool for audio production it's 15+ years behind the commercial shit on Windows and OSX. And that's assuming it's not a buggy, unstable piece of shit (I only tried it briefly) like nearly every other FOSS project I've encountered.

The point is not

This is because for Linux People, using Linux is an end, not a means. You sacrifice time and software quality so that you can be using Linux. If you refuse to, you're just lazy, because using Linux is such an obviously worthwhile end that any sacrifice is worth it. It wouldn't matter if the only image editor for Linux was GPaint, they'd still say it was a valid alternative to Photoshop. Learning to do all your image editing pixel by pixel would be worth it if that was the only way you could use Linux.

Weird because I do almost all of my gaming on Linux (99%). But sure, keep talking like it's 2009. Don't be surprised that linux users make fun of you in a thread made about how nobody is using Windows 11.

You mean you don't use your guitar as a fancy input device for your web server? What are you even using a guitar for then? Edge case alert!

Win 11's adoption rate is significantly faster than Win 10's at the same point in its life cycle, and gamers are adopting it faster than everyone else - it's up to 32% on Steam, making it about 25x more popular than Linux as a gaming platform. Too early to tell what the long term trend will be. Win 8 had a better first year than Win 10, too.

I don't know about Win11 but I know Win8 and Win10 were hoisted upon unwitting users early on. I assume they're doing that again.
Not that I fault Microsoft too much for automatic Win10 -> Win11 updates, if you're using Windows that's part of the package and understood at this point. Windows 8 was understandably egregious.
