Diseased Rowling Derangement Syndrome - "TERF/Woke Author Bad!!1"

They are pretty much slaves working for free but they take a lot of pride in their work and, with rare exceptions, this kind of relationship with their wizards \ wizard families is their culture that they are very proud of so they take someone trying to "free" them or pay them as offensive.
If you want to free an elf you need to give it a piece of clothing - for most elfs it's like being fired, very saddening and humiliating.

We get to see three house elf characters through the story, IIRC. One is Dobby, who's considered a freak by other house elves for wishing for freedom. The second is Winky (sp? Been a long fucking while), who is specified as being normal for a house elf and so goes into deep depression when she's freed. The third is Kreacher, a cantankerous old elf who was severely mistreated by most of the Black family (read: a bunch of assholes) but who remained loyal to them and particularly to the one that treated him with dignity (and who takes a shine to the main characters for doing the same). No one in the books except for Hermione considers them a wronged class, and the house elves themselves think she's annoying when she tries to free them. By the time they meet Kreacher she's learned her lesson and simply treats him (and other house elves) as humanely as she can.

Narratively, the house elves help show just how fucking weird the wizarding world is, and how applying muggle rules to it is not a good idea. It also explains how Hogwarts is kept maintained with only one janitor and one groundskeeper, and how the school's three meals are provided since you can't conjure food under that setting' magic system (and the elves of Hogwarts are described as a very cheerful bunch that are treated well by their master). Back in the day I thought it was an interesting way to show a non-human species with a very non-human mindset, but these days it's all just haram to people.
They sound like Brownies in Scottish folklore, spirits that do your chores for you while you're asleep.

^ Especially this part:

Gifts of clothing

If the family gives the brownie a gift of clothing, he will leave forever and refuse to work for the family.[6][13][30][31] The first mention in English of a brownie disappearing after being presented with clothes comes from Book Four, Chapter Ten of Reginald Scot's The Discoverie of Witchcraft, published in 1584.[30] Sometimes brownies are reported to recite couplets before disappearing.[32] One brownie from Scotland is said to have angrily declared:

Rowling could release a statement saying she prefers waffles over pancakes and the troons would try to spin it as some kind of -phobic dog whistle. Sad thing is this doesn’t even seem like hyperbole to me anymore.
"I like my waffles light and fluffy"
CLEARLY she's being antisemitic! Waffles=Waffe, Light and Fluffy= Luft. She's giving out secret Nazi TERF orders under our noses. We have to boycott Eggos for being transphobic!

I don't think we have a witch trials thread? It was interesting hearing Rowling say she read a bunch of queer theory and trans memoirs before speaking out, including Andrea Long Chu.

Trans Visibility remains the best peaking material there is.

Posting tax: Going insane running a gimmick account.

Yeah, we're gonna buckle up, alright. But not for Rowling.

I’m currently working through the entire Harry Potter series as bedtime stories for my kid and we’re on Book 5.

For non Pottertards, by this point in the story Voldemort has returned but the establishment are unwilling to believe this, meaning Harry is treated like a nutter and the Ministry of Magic send an absolutely loathsome character called Umbridge to work at Hogwarts to undermine Dumbledore. This character basically tortures Harry for telling the truth and stops teaching defensive magic properly, so Harry and his friends have to create a club which meets in secret to practise spells that might save their lives one day. Umbridge gets wind of this and bans groups of more than 3 students meeting up, as well as a load of other oppressive rules, which turns the school into a miserable place with no freedom.

As I was reading this to my kid I was really reminded of the ways feminist groups have either had to meet/ communicate in secret or been subject to harassment and intimidation, attempts to get them shit down. The punishment of dissenters for telling an unpleasant truth also felt very familiar

I wanted to say something about the irony of people who latched on to HP and now denounce it acting the same way but I got ennui just attempting it. If you're on book 5 I'm guessing your kids like it so I'm focusing on the positive of kids enjoying stories. My local library has a waiting list for the books now and they've ordered more. My local book shop says they are selling loads, but that they've also seen an increased interest in Rowling's other novels. They've got a central display with her works when you enter. I'm happy a new generation gets into stories/reading.

Replace "wand" with "firearm".

Yeah, they have enjoyed it and it’s been a jumping off point for the older kid to get her teeth into other book series like Redwall.

Thinking of taking a break after Book 5 and reading something else with the youngest as it’s a bit heavy going and I think we could all do with a change of scenery.

There are many comments like this:
Journos are lying scum (Rita Skeeter)
Slactivism is pointless and harmful (SPEW)
Politicians are scum (Cornelius Fudge)

In these oversensitive times, we should be glad didn't name the House Elves "Brownies"
There were Brownies in Willow, both the original movie and last year's show.

Now it's dogpiling anything they can on top of "who would have thought she could be any worse" as if it's well established fact she's an evil cretin, now we're talking about this and how she's even more evil of a cretin now.
How do you get worse than being a mass murdering genocidal maniac who is basically Super Duper Mega Hitler?

Easy, become a troon.

Seriously though, every moment she's goes on unrepentant makes her worse in the troon eyes, and as long as they can make vague statements with no facts she will continue on her path to Ultra Mecha Hitler.
