How old are Alex's parents? Alex herself is 29-30 so they'd be bear minimum in their 50s? 60s? Would they even be healthy and capable themselves to care for an infant and later child?

It doesn't matter how old he is. Being a man means you don't get to opt out of responsibilities because you have an addiction, are too old, or it's too early in a relationship, or whatever excuse. You just have to do it because it's the right thing, even if it drives him to an early grave.

My point is you can't just do whatever you want during a war; there are limits on harming women, children, and vulnerable populations. Cutting off means of existing for cripples, women, and children is a serious crime, even during war. I didn't mean to offend you.
